Those who are aware with the exam must note that the online application process for CSIR NET 2017 starts on August 23, 2017. The tentative date for the test is December 17, 2017. What is CSIR UGC NET?
CSIR NET exam is conducted for selection of candidates for Junior Research Fellowship and/or Assistant Lectureship in colleges and universities. The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on the behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC), hence it is called UGC CSIR NET.
The NET exam is a single paper MCQ based test which is conducted over two sessions on a single day. The exam is conducted for Physical Science, Earth Science, Mathematical Science, Chemical Science, and Life Science subjects.
Candidates who have completed M.Sc or equivalent degree/ BE/ B.Tech/ B.Pharma/MBBS with at least 55% marks for General and OBC and 50% for SC/ST, and Persons with Disability (PwD) category can apply for the test. The candidates whose result is awaited can also apply.
The CSIR NET application fee for General category is Rs. 1000, for OBC category candidates Rs. 500, and for SC/ ST/ Person with Disability category it is Rs. 250.

What are Career Prospects through CSIR NET?
So, coming down to the career options, there are ample job opportunities apart from mainstream jobs.
Firstly, if you choose to go for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and with the Ph.D. program, add the doctoral or post-doctoral degree to your portfolio. Moreover, you might get recruited at the Research Fellow positions in any of the reputed CSIR Research Laboratories.
Besides the 37 CSIR Research Labs, the Défense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) also offers wonderful job opportunities based on CSIR NET score. DRDO considers NET Scorecard for the selection of scientists and research trainers in one of its 48 research labs.
If you are only interested in government sector then you have option for a decent job in Public Sector Units (PSUs) as well. You can join companies such as BARC, IGCAR, and even ISRO.
Further, qualified candidates can opt for Assistant Professorship. Being an Assistant Professor or Lecturer in Government Universities is one of the most prestigious jobs these days also. NET qualifiers always grab the highest number of seats among thousands of candidates that apply for the vacant positions for Government Lecturers.
Apart from the Government universities, CSIR NET Qualified candidates are also on priority of private sector. Private Universities hire CSIR NET qualified candidates with at least 10 years of experience. These candidates can be promoted to the positions like – ‘Head of Department’, ‘Vice Chancellor’ or even ‘Director’ of the University.

What job profiles are offered through CSIR NET?
There are many career options within the various job profiles for CSIR NET qualifiers. If you chose Professorship, you can be posted as a Reader, or an Assistant Professor. Then, you can have the opportunity to be promoted to Professor position and finally Head of the Department.
You can be a Scientist or Senior Scientist at Laboratories. You can be Group leader or Lab Trainer as well. Further you can also be a Program Executive.
What could be your salary package through CSIR NET?
If you wonder about what could be the salary of a NET qualified person, well, it is pretty decent in almost all the job options they have.
Starting with that of a Scientist at DRDO or CSIR or even ISRO, they start with a moderate salary of something like Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000. However, with eventual growth, it might lead up to an average of Rs. 1 lakh per month. PSUs also offer a decent salary starting minimum at Rs. 6 lakhs per annum up to 12 lakhs.
The candidates who seeks for Junior Research Fellowship are also entitled with good amount of remuneration. If you qualify for JRF then you would get Rs. 25,000 and once fellowship is upgraded to SRF then stipend is increased up to Rs. 28,000 for the 3rd and subsequent years.
Salary package of Assistant Professors at Government Universities starts with minimum CTC per year of 6 Lakhs and after the promotion you might be getting a minimum Rs. 12 Lakhs per year.
Further, Private Universities also offers good salary packages to the Professors. The Professors there can earn decent salary starting from Rs. 5 lakhs per annum and it can go up to Rs. 15 lakhs per annum and it may increase even more depending on the job profile and experience.
What are growth opportunities through CSIR NET?
There are very promising growth opportunities after CSIR NET. If you choose to become a Research fellow, you have a lot of scope in future. You can either choose your career as a lecturer or a group leader that involves managing the entire research team and presenting the work of the laboratory. As a lecturer, you can go up to supervising research students, teaching, reviewing grants and papers etc.
If you start with the Assistant Professor job, you can further aspire to be Professor of your particular subject in some department of the university. Further experience may also lead up to one getting the Head of the Department post. You can even become the Vice-chancellor of the University you started at as an Assistant Professor.
Similarly, in the DRDO or in any of the PSUs you have equal opportunities for growth after CSIR NET. You can be a distinguished Scientist or lead a project as a Project Head. Moreover, you can even establish your own Research Lab. To do so, you need to get due permission from the Government.
