As a nation, we love honouring achievements. From Padma Shri to the Filmfare, Indians who achieve greatness in literature, film, music, journalism, social work, sports, science are rewarded for their hard work and dedication but what happens if they don’t want to be honoured?
For decades, the recipients have been renouncing their awards to make a statement and show their displeasure, indignation against the government.
Some of them renounce the honour to express their rage against terror attacks, killings, lynchings and sometimes it is a matter of personal hurt or pride.
