Back in Time is ED’s newspaper type column that reports an incident from the past as though it has happened just yesterday. It allows the reader to re-live it several years later, on the date it had occurred.
For this incident, we go back in time to 2001.
United States, October 23, 2001: The CEO of Apple Inc. was finally seen stepping foot into the world of portable music players when he introduced the brand’s first ever music player fondly called the ‘iPod’.
“Music is a part of everyone’s life”, said Steve Jobs before unveiling this new product that he had brought into the market.
Competing straight with CD players and Walkmans, the iPod is a small music player that plays not only MP3 format but also all the available digital music formats.
Possessing an unbelievably fast music compression of 160K bit rate which means you could add one thousand songs onto the iPod under a mere span of 10 minutes. Installed with an extraordinary 10-hour battery life, the music player can have a playback like a beast while you take it jogging, hiking or bicycling.
The best part about this ultra-modern music player is that it fits unnoticeably right into your pocket.
The iPod is an innovative and modernistic take of Apple on the world of portable and digital music players but the creeping incompatibility with operating systems other than Mac may not attract a wider audience.
We shall wait and see if the world loved Apple’s newest venture or not.
Post-scriptum: It would be an understatement to say that the world of portable music players was revolutionised with the introduction of Apple’s iPod.
But just like any other Apple product, the first generation iPod was also accused of being designed only to cater the elitist. There were unarguably several other factors that affirmed that accusation including its price as compared to other portable music players and its compatibility with only Mac OS computer systems.
The sale of iPods increased strikingly by the end of the year 2004 due to incorporation of compatibility with Windows, ultimately leading Apple to release multiple models of the iPod including the Classic, Mini, Nano, Shuffle and finally the latest iPod touch.
Although the craze of iPod has sure seen an observable downfall over the years but it’s a no-brainer that it once ruled over the genre of media players. Afterall, the joy of changing songs by circling on that clickwheel was one of the most proud and tech-savy moments of our childhood.
