Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.
Once you get into the habit of getting late, there’s no going back.
I was a very disciplined child until my parents did all the work for me, from waking me up for school to dressing me up, and making me do my homework, to putting me to bed early. However, since I became more independent, time management has been a constant struggle.
My younger sister and I were in the same school. My school had this rule where if a student got late more than three times, they used to be sent back home after that.
My entire high school went with my father waiting in his scooter for 20 more minutes, even after dropping my sister to school. Just to see my running down, and jumping on his scooter while only 5 minutes were left for the school bell to ring. I’ll be eternally thankful that my school was half a kilometre away from home.
When the ‘late for school’ section in my dairy reached the third mark in an academic year, I used to steal my sister’s school dairy and start afresh. When that too reached its third limit, I started taking out my junior school’s dairies, as then I was always before time because my parents had control over my entire routine.

I have lost count of how many times I have heard my relatives saying, “How come you’re late every time when your father is the most punctual person?” Yes, it is difficult to have extremely disciplined parents.
I remember that I was going somewhere with my father once, when he got agitated and left me at home, intending to teach me a lesson. But like I said, once you’re habituated to getting late, there’s no coming back. Even if I start getting ready 2 hours before I need to be somewhere, I still get late.
My friends too tried bringing me on track by telling me to arrive at a destination an hour before they were to be there. Yet, they used to be there and still had to wait for me.
I’ll someday win the Guinness World Record for always being late.
Here’s a question to all the latecomers, what are you doing to tackle this problem? I desperately need implementable solutions, so do let us know in the comments below.
