The industrial sector is a boon for the country and we have heard how distant agriculture and technology are. For several years, the government of India has tried several ways through which technology can be ingrained in agriculture.
However, other than the government, no private company has been successful in doing that. And, here comes the role of FarmERP, one of the world’s first companies to bring software to agriculture.
Let’s Know About FarmERP
The co-founders and engineers of FarmERP, Sanjay Borkar and Santosh Shinde describe FarmERP as “An intelligent and next-generation farm management platform, developed to ready a wide range of entities and stakeholders for the future.
By leveraging the power of advanced technologies, FarmERP helps businesses form elements of strategies around farm, farmer, procurement, processing, supply chain and financial data management, and analysis.”
The startup was conceived in 2001 and it was a significant step taken as agriculture and technology have always remained detached from each other. Since its inception, the startup based in Pune has been working towards amalgamating crop health, environmental health and public health.
It has been able to improve various aspects of farm management while, on the other hand, it pledged to safeguard humans and the ecosystem. Their strategies are perfectly aligned with that of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals’ two visions- Zero Hunger and Climate Change.

How It All Began
Both the co-founders knew that there could be a way through which they could bring technology and agriculture together. Hence, they started their journey by developing “multilingual computer-based training kits” that would be given to farmers, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and agricultural institutes.
Sanjay agreed that the journey wasn’t a cakewalk. However, as luck was on their side, few progressive farmers agreed to try out their products to see how it managed their farms while saving time, resources and money.
Initially the company was named as Farm Management Software and later in 2007, it was renamed as FarmERP. Talking to Your Story, the co-founders stated, “Selling directly to farmers was very difficult and getting money from them was even tougher. So, we targeted corporates, and got our first opportunity in Oman in 2010.” They wish to make FarmERP the “MS Office Package” for farmers.
Their Journey So Far
For the past 10 years, they have been successful in deploying FarmERP in 25 countries, amongst which are the USA, Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. It has been able to serve more than one million farmers, either directly or indirectly and made it a profitable journey for them.
The founders revealed that since March 2020, their revenues have seen a growth of 65%. Founders stated, “FarmERP has also partnered with Go4Fresh and NextOn Foods for procurement and ensuring predictability and profitability for vegetable growers in India and Southeast Asia.”
In the Asia Agriculture challenge organized by Value-Chain Capacity Building Network (VCB-N), they won second position and desire to earn a revenue of Rs. 100 crores by 2023.
