Watch: 7 Weird Indian Laws That Still Exist

3032

Occasionally, archaic laws from the colonial era are left behind in the Indian Penal Code. Some of these are not just obsolete but also bizarre, from needing government clearance for kite-flying to laws about telegraphs.

Why do some bizarre laws still exist?

Most, if not all, laws that have weird undertones are centuries-old— crafted in the colonial era by Britishers who made pointless law after law in an effort to suppress the nation.

Post partition, further laws meant to bring princely states together were created, laws, which have since become obsolete.

1000+ laws have been scrapped in the past 5 years alone

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it a point to get rid of the “maze of useless laws” that India has been afflicted by.

In the past couple of years, thousands of archaic laws, ranging from Acts on the regulation of hackney carriages to needing well-brushed teeth to be considered for the post of an inspector in Andhra Pradesh, have found their way to the dustbin of history.

Once the principal Act was amended, these amendment laws have lost relevance. Their presence in the statute books as independent laws is unnecessary and they are only clogging the system,” a government official said.

And yet, there still exist laws that have purposefully not been repealed. There continue to remain laws on how much telegraph wires a person can own, despite the fact that the telegraph service itself shut back in 2013.

In order to unclog the justice system and make things smoother for citizens, it is all but necessary that the government repeal obsolete laws like the ones mentioned above in order to rid the country of bizarre (and occasionally funny) laws.
