Round 16 of the Formula One season of 2013 was held at the Buddh International Circuit, India. Unfortunately though this Grand Prix is not going to make it’s way on the 2014 calender due to “political reasons” but hopefully we should see it taking place in 2015 again. The race was sure to be an action packed one as the tire strategies of the top 10 drivers totally differed as four of the top ten drivers had opted to start the race on primes while the other six cars were going to start on softer compound tires.
As the season draws to an end Sebastian Vettel’s strong performance continued as he won the race and also clinched his 4th consecutive title. His team mate Mark Webber however had quite an interesting race. At the start he made contact with Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen but at a later stage had reliability issues with his alternator and as a result he had to retire. Red bull seem to be working only on Vettel’s car this year looking at the number of retirements Mark Webber has made this season which is also his last in Formula 1.
The Mercedes drivers had quite a good race with Nico Rosberg finishing 2nd. Lewis Hamilton had a very good start but made a slight mistake in the beginning stages of the race which cost him dearly. That and his struggling tires meant that he finished the race in 6th position. He also lost time being behind Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez. The Mclaren driver Sergio Perez finished in 5th place which was one of the best results for him in his career.
There was some quite intense racing between the Lotus drivers in the last few laps but in the end, they had a good race with Grosjean finishing 3rd and Kimi Raikkonen finishing 7th. Raikkonen might have been on the podium if Lotus had pitted him earlier as he was struggling on those tires and had to come into the pits to change his tires in the last lap of the race.
The Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa finished 11th and 4th. Massa had a very good clean start and was leading the race at a point but unfortunately could not make his way to the podium. Fernando Alonso had one of the worst races of the season as Mark Webber made contact with him on the very first lap which literally destroyed Alonso’s race as he had to change his front wing and he came out of the pits in 20th position and ended his race in 11th position. This has been the first time in 13 races that Fernando Alonso has not scored points.
Force India had quite a decent race with drivers Adrian Sutil and Paul di resta finished the race in 9th and 8th position. It was good to see both Force India’s in the top 10 at their home race and this was purely because of their clever tire stratergies and pitstops at the right time.
To conclude it was a good interesting race with a lot of drama. The highlight of this race has to be watching Sebastian Vettel clinch his 4th consecutive title in style. There is also a lot of talk about the battle between Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean after hearing the team radio messages and we will have to see how the drivers react to it in the next race. Overall it was a very interesting race and hopefully it will be able to make it’s way on the calendar in 2015 again.
