Food delivery company, Zomato draws flak after deleting an honest review by a customer. It is not the first time that the food company has been targeted. Reviews play quite an essential role nowadays.

Before ordering anything or going anywhere, we tend to check the reviews to know what we must expect. Hence, deleting a review is an issue that matters to today’s generation.

The Issue

A resident of Bangalore, Disha Sanghvi shared an honest review of a restaurant on the Zomato application, however, later the review was deleted.

Disha suffered from food poisoning after eating at a restaurant in Koramangala and shared her experience. She also mentioned that she wasn’t alone as her colleague and a few other people had also suffered from food poisoning after eating at the restaurant. However, Zomato took down the review and sent her an email for the same.

She took to Twitter to share the matter and also attached a screenshot of the mail she received. “A recent visit to a restaurant in Koramangala, B’lore left my colleague and me with a severe case of food poisoning. I wrote a review on Zomato and while doing so, found that many people had a similar experience in the last few months. Zomato took down the review citing this,” she wrote.

Zomato’s Reaction

In the email, the company wrote that their platform isn’t the correct platform to report health violations.

At Zomato, we conduct regular checks on the reviews published on our platform and within these checks, we noticed that the said review is in violation of our content guidelines. Thus, it has been pulled down on grounds of mentioning health code violations,” the company wrote.

Citing a few restrictions, Zomato wrote, “We welcome all opinions on a restaurant however good, bad or ugly and this variety of feedback is what makes Zomato useful to foodies like you and me. That said, we do have a few restrictions when it comes to content that is permitted on Zomato.

As per our content guidelines, Zomato is not the appropriate platform for reporting health code violations. We believe that this particular subject is best reported to concerned authorities who can investigate the matter. Due to this reason, your review has been deleted.”

Netizens’ Reaction

As soon as Disha’s tweet went viral, people started reacting to it. A user asked, “If people cannot share their experience in the comments and that’s called ‘abusing’ then what are the comments for?”

Another user wrote, “Hello Zomato! This is exactly the kind of review I want to see. If the food is average, it’ll just be one to try and skip. But if the food can affect my health, that’s definitely something to be highlighted. If the restaurant makes some resolution, they can reply to the comment.”

Bashing the rules, a user wrote, “Hey Zomato, If this is not something you permit on your platform then there is something seriously wrong with your rules.  This is EXACTLY what you want to be reported and have consumers be aware of it.  Let the vendor respond if it’s unfair.”

After Disha made the post on Twitter, it soon went viral and prompted Zomato to respond. They wrote, “Hi, sorry to hear that. Please share your phone number / Order id via private message and we’ll address this matter immediately.”

In a separate post, they mentioned that they are investigating the matter and will resolve it soon.
