The battle of the sexes has been going on for centuries now and doesn’t seem anywhere close to stopping.
The recent announcement of Italy’s current Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni being named the ‘man of the year’ by an Italian newspaper for the 2023 year was much cause of disturbance to some feminists.
What Happened?
A few days ago, Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s first female Prime Minister was given the title of “Man of the Year” by Libero Quotidiano.
Libero Quotidiano is a far-right daily newspaper published in Milan and the piece was written by Mario Sechi, who is not only the chief of the paper’s Rome bureau and was also reportedly a former member of the PM’s public relations team.
Meloni was named ‘Man of the Year’, and Sechi wrote in the article that “In our society of weak thinking, we have recognized strong ideas.”
The piece further had how “Giorgia Meloni for Libero is ‘man of the year’ because above everything she has cancelled the war of the sexes by winning it, by thinking differently, being divergent, overcoming the arrogance of men and the defeatism of women. She has not only broken the glass ceiling, she has dissolved it.”

The article explained the reason for choosing Meloni writing “in excessive diversity, we have reversed gender. In times of war, we have chosen someone who has shown she knows how to fight”.
The article however, had angered several women’s rights activists and female politicians in Italy who believe it is just another affirmation of male superiority and also accused the PM of not taking proper steps to protect women from violence and other issues.
Meloni and her party were also said to promote regressive views around women in society with a politician from her own party making statements just a few days ago about how the “first aspiration” of a young woman should be to have a child.
Elly Schlein, secretary of the centre-left Democratic Party, condemned the title and stated, “Today a right-wing newspaper is explaining to us that politics and power are for men.”
The Telegraph also quoted her saying “I don’t think my aspiration as a politician is to become ‘man of the year’. On the contrary, I think this is a surrender.”
Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (Greens and Left Alliance) MP Elisabetta Piccolotti believes the article is “an affirmation of male superiority” and that Meloni should reject the title. In a Facebook post, Piccolotti wrote “At this point, Prime Minister, please clarify: are you a woman, are you a man or are you non-binary?”
