In a collaborative survey of World Economic Forum and the world’s third-largest market research company, Ipsos, which indulged 20,000 adults from 27 countries, it was established that about 26% of the surveyed people do not intend to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Among the nations surveyed, Russia has 54% of its citizens, the highest count, who are not up for an intake of a vaccine against COVID-19, even if it is accessible to them, which is then followed by Poland, Hungary, France, South Africa, Italy, Germany, United States and so on.
Although the coronavirus has wreaked much havoc globally, and an effective vaccine is being anticipated a lot, a certain proportion of people have entirely contradicting perception and reasons to keep the vaccine at bay.
Reasons behind speculated vaccine’s rejection
The survey informs us about several grounds on which the decision of those who do not seem to be ready for a vaccine is based-
They fear side-effects
Globally, 56% of the surveyed people reasoned that they fear the possible side-effects of the vaccine.
Vaccinations generally exhibit mild side-effects such as soreness, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Some vaccines may also be associated with fever, rash, and aches. But, the cases of severe or fatal side-effects are quite rare to be considered.
In most cases, the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the side-effects and hence, vaccination does not bother people.

They’re hesitant about the efficacy
About 29% of the surveyed people expressed their concerns about the vaccine’s efficacy.
As the vaccine developers all across the world are engaged in a race against time to succeed in the hunt of a vaccine against COVID-19, it is being observed that the clinical trials, which are supposed to be consecutive otherwise, are overlapping.
To cater to the extremity of hue and cry that the world is currently facing, the vaccine candidates are going through fast-track development and approval methods.
People are also sceptical about the economic factor that is playing a role in the fast development of a vaccine and the possibility of this factor’s influence on the vaccine’s efficiency.
All these aspects are leading to the mistrust of people.
Confronting all these speculations, the heads of nine biopharmaceutical companies have vowed to develop and test potential vaccines in accordance with high ethical standards and sound scientific principles.
The drugmakers have also ensured the diversity in choosing volunteers in their larger clinical trials for safe and effective development of the vaccine.
People are misinterpreting herd immunity
A section of people believes when a large population gets infected and generates antibodies against the virus, they will not need the vaccine at all.
A report of Scroll.in informs that the misleading opinion about herd immunity will prevent people from getting vaccinated.
“Herd immunity is what enables us to eliminate diseases using vaccines. It is not something that can be achieved by natural infection. Numerous diseases have been eliminated in many countries thanks to herd immunity produced by vaccination programmes. But herd immunity is not something that can be achieved by natural infection,” reads the report.
With many countries having multiple outbreaks of COVID-19, controlling the pandemic without a vaccine seems to be an unrealistic aim.
We hope that with the arrival of an approved and well-tested vaccine, all these uncertainties related to its efficiency and requirements get sorted.
