Which Social Media Has The Most Users in 2020?

-

Social media has been a massive part of almost everyone’s lives since the introduction of Six Degrees in 1997. It is entirely possible that the CEO of the site, Andrew Weinreich, created a huge sensation that has almost engulfed half of the world’s population by 2020. Admittedly, Six Degrees is not around anymore, and other networks have superseded it. However, which social media has the most users in 2020?

The year 2020 has been a strange one for everyone, and the internet has seen one of the most massive influxes of new and recurring users. In fact, the statistics show that there are now more people who use social media in the world than do not. The figures as of July 2020 show that 51% of the global population have at least one account, with most people having a lot more. The more staggering fact to note is that the average social media user actually has around nine different accounts.

If you consider the fact that most social media platforms have a strict age policy stating that only people thirteen and older can own a social media account, the percentage rises to almost 65% of 13+-year-olds.

But Which Social Media Has The Most Users?

You could probably guess which of the social media platforms have the most users, but in this article, we are going to focus on which are the top six. We have listed them in order of the most users to the least if you can call over a billion users “the least.” The great thing about social media platforms is that you have the option, through sites like SMM-World, to gain viewers, followers, likes, and other engagements. When you have billions of people to follow you, the possibilities are endless.

All of the numbers that we have listed below are estimates based on data up to July 2020. Of course, the estimation may go up or down because of newcomers and leavers. However, the numbers are not going to vary hugely.

  1. WeChat

WeChat is a lot like Whatsapp and Cashapp mixed into one. The Chinese app was first released in 2011 and became the world’s largest standalone mobile app by 2018. While it is a Chinese app, it is still one of the top five social media platforms available today. With 1.203 billion active users per month, it is not hard to see that it is hugely popular. If all of the users are in China, which they are not, it would account for 85% of the population of the country.

  1. Facebook Messenger

The first of three apps that Facebook own to appear on this list of five is not a surprise. 1.3 billion people have accounts with Facebook messenger, which is a 6th of the world’s population in total. One of the craziest thoughts about this is that it is the number of active users, not how many accounts there are. So, if you have an account with them, but you do not use it, I am afraid you are not on the list.

  1. Whatsapp

The second installment of the Facebook franchise on this list is Whatsapp. So many people use the messaging app that I don’t know a single person with a phone who doesn’t have it. Whatsapp already had millions of users when Facebook took over the platform. Still, since the $19bn deal, the platform has grown so much that it is hard to distinguish it between a social media platform and a messaging app. However, having 2 billion active users, it is undoubtedly one of the largest in the world.

  1. YouTube

Again, another platform that has grown so much that it is somewhat difficult to think of it as a social media platform. However, going back to the roots of YouTube, that is what it was designed for. In fact, YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim posted the first video on the platform on April 23, 2005. The video was called “Me at the zoo“, and has since racked up 110,173,000+ views, and Jawed has 1.09 million subscribers, with only that video. I do wonder if he ever thought that Google would buy the platform off him for $1.65 billion and that it would have 2 billion users today.

  1. Facebook

Is there any surprise that the social media platform that has the most users in 2020 is Facebook? Probably not. With 2.603+ billion active users, it isn’t easy to find someone who doesn’t have an account. People all over the world use it to keep in touch with each other, share stories, and have groups where they can learn anything from meditation to mechanics. While 2.603 billion users is a vast number, during the last six months, the platform has had 25.5 billion visits. That works out to 97,031 visits every second of every day.

Which Social Media Has The Most Users in 2020? – Conclusion

It was little surprise to find that Facebook has the most users in 2020, and it is likely that the number is only going to rise. The age of the internet is firmly upon us, and I am sure that there are only very few people waiting until they are 13 years old just so that they can get a Facebook account. Just for a little comparison, so that you can get a better picture of how many people that really is:

1 US billion seconds is about 32 years.
