After China and the United States, India has the third largest education system in the world, made up of 795 universities, 39,671 affiliated colleges, 10,15,696 teaching faculty, and 2,37,64,960 students.

Higher education institutions in India are in dire need of an infusion of quality in the approach to building world-class educational institutions in the Indian context and environment. Thus, research assessment and national ranking of Indian educational institutions play a very important role in improving the performance and quality of academic institutions.

This is what the Expert Committee set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory body in India that oversees higher education, does. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), launched in 2015, is an annual ranking methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India to rank institutions of higher education in India.

Each ranking parameter and its sub-head have a weightage assigned to it. During the assessment, the data that the institution can provide simply or is easily available from third-party sources and can be verified smoothly is collected.

A score is then computed under each sub-head based on a suitable metric according to the collected data. All the scores under the sub-heads are then added to obtain scores for each parameter.

The overall score, out of 100, is then calculated based on the weights allotted to each head. It is on these scores based on which institutions are ranked.

Now that you know about the process through which India’s universities are ranked, here are the 5 crucial parameters on which they are based:

The NIRF rankings are on an overall basis and are also classified based on research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, innovation, and agriculture and allied sectors.
