If you think the PC gaming community consists of overgrown man-children who waste away their lives playing mindless games, prepare to be amazed at the great potential UNICEF sees in these gamer geeks.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is calling out to gamers globally to raise funds for the children in Syria using their superpower – the Graphics Card. “Game Chaingers” is an innovative initiative which is organizing the first-ever fundraiser by mining ethereum.

Capitalizing on the cryptocurrency boom and the solidarity of the community of PC players, Game Chaingers intends to raise much-needed funds through a low-effort means. Since the gaming community has the highest number of graphics card holders, they are invited to finance the mission by simply using their PCs to mine ethereum.

What Is Ethereum Mining?

If you think “ethereum mining” sounds like extracting ethereum from a cave using a pickaxe, you haven’t strayed too far from the answer.

Mining involves exchanging the computing capacity of your PC for a monetary reward. Unlike paper money, cryptocurrency is not issued by a central government. Miners are those individuals who extract cryptocurrency by using special software to solve computational problems. In exchange, the miners receive a certain number of cryptocoins.

Cryptocurrency mining was initially done using the processors in computers until miners figured out that graphics cards used for gaming were much better suited for this job and get it done faster. Among the dozens of cryptocurrencies available now, Ethereum is one of those that can be mined.

How Is This Going To Change Things?

As cryptocurrency keeps out the need for middlemen during transactions, it saves humanitarian organizations like UNICEF a lot of money on this front.

The loss of UN Aid Budgets due to corruption is also a persistent problem. In 2012, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported the loss of 30% of the fund that, among other developmental plans, would have provided many children in Nigeria a chance for education.

Ethereum provides an innovative solution to this problem by allowing the organization to transfer payments directly to the beneficiaries without the need of agents. It monitors each stage of the transaction and ensures safe delivery.

According to UNICEF reports, nearly 8.4 million children have been affected by the conflict either in Syria or as refugees in neighbouring countries. Around 6 million of them are in dire need of humanitarian aid and more than 2 million of them live in areas difficult to reach or under siege.

I’m A Gamer! How Do I Sign Up?

If you own a computer with a graphics card, you can contribute too!

All you need to do is install Claymore, a mining software. You can then launch it to mine whenever you want – while you’re working, taking a break or even sleeping! It takes absolutely no other effort or expenditure from your side. The funds you generate will go directly to UNICEF’s ethereum wallet for a good cause.
