The film ‘The Kerala Story’ has been extremely controversial ever since its announcement in November of 2022.

An 80-second clip of the film went viral last year where lead actor Adaa Sharma states how she was forced to convert from Shalini Unnikrishnan to Fatima Ba and also said that “Like me, 32,000 women are already converted and buried in the desert of Syria and Yemen. A deadly game is being played to convert normal girls into dreaded terrorists in Kerala.”

The film directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah claimed that 32,000 girls from Kerala had been forcefully converted and made to join the Islamic State or ISIS in the last 10 years.

The whole 32,000 number was enough to raise a lot of hue and cry about the credibility of the claims and now Shashi Tharoor has made some sarcastic comments after it changed the film’s description from 32,000 to just 3 women.

What Did Shashi Tharoor Say?

Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor and many others had been raising questions about the validity of the film’s claims and what evidence it had for what it was stated to be a truth. After seeing the recent changes in the film’s trailer and description Tharoor snarkily replied “The plot thickens. The filmmakers have updated the movie’s description on YouTube and changed ‘32,000 women’ to ‘3 women’.

Earlier, they said the movie is about the “heartbreaking and gut-wrenching stories of 32,000 females in Kerala”. Now it says: “The Kerala Story is a compilation of the true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala”. I rest my case.”

Tharoor had also earlier called it a “gross exaggeration and distortion of the Kerala reality”.

The staggering number and the film stating that it was based on the “heart-breaking and gut-wrenching stories of 32,000 females in Kerala” had a lot of people raising alarms. Kerala Congress leader MM Hassan had asked for a ban on the movie believing it could create communal disharmony while CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the film was spreading propaganda.

Now, it seems the filmmakers are trying to backpedal on the 32,000 figure and asking why the numbers matter in the first place. As per reports, the makers speaking with ANI questioned if the situation would become less severe if it was only 100 women.

According to the latest trailer description on YouTube, it says that the film is based on the “true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala.”
