It wasn’t too long ago when Navika Kumar’s interview with Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra went viral. The reason for that was an unneeded focus by Kumar about Chopra’s dating status, his new female fan following and such.
People on social media instantly took offence with the clips circulating, about how a sportsperson who has brought such honour to the country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics should not be subject to such ridiculous questions.
They felt it was demeaning and also invading his privacy and there were much more important and relevant questions that should be asked of him.
Now, not too soon after that, radio jockey (RJ) Malishka Mendonsa has also gone viral after a clip of her dancing with some of her female co-workers serenading Neeraj Chopra while on an online interview was posted.
What Did RJ Malishka Do?
RJ Maliskha, as she is better known, from Red FM radio station, is quite popular for her previously viral song ‘Sonu Tuza Mazyavar Bharosa Nai Kai – Pothole Mix’ that came out in 2017.
The song was applauded by Mumbaikars and others too for very astutely pointing out the extremely prevalent issue of potholes in Mumbai and how they make life quite difficult for the average citizen. She also poked fun at the BMC for which they took action against her too.
However, while that was a positive example of going viral, RJ Malishka’s recent trend is not so positive. On 19th August, she posted this clip on her Twitter account where she and some other female colleagues can be seen dancing to the song Uden Jab Jab Zulfen Teri from the film Naya Daur (1957).

We are then shown that 23-year-old Neeraj Chopra is also there on Malishka’s laptop, indicating Malishka’s ongoing virtual interview with him. Chopra had made history at the recent Olympic Games by winning India’s first gold medal in javelin throw in the Olympics. People absolutely did not like this at all with many Twitter users comments that this was unprofessional and borderline harassment.
Some pointed out how many people would have had a major problem if the genders were reversed and some 4-5 male RJs had been dancing to romantic Hindi songs in front of the female Olympic winners like P.V. Sindhu or Mirabai Chanu.
Another clip also went viral wherein RJ Malishka can be seen asking for a virtual hug or “jaadu ki jhappi” (a reference to the Munnabhai movies) and goes on to hug the screen to which Chopra replied that “Namaste… Aise door se hi Namaste (I’ll say Namaste from a distance)”.

The tweet it seems did not impress people as would have been expected, since it only brought on a storm of trolling for the RJ with people deeming it high levels of cringe.

What do you think, was this dance and other things really cringey? Do interviewers need to change their approach towards famous personalities and behave accordingly?
