Quick Tips to Fix a Jammed Lock

-

You can never appreciate the swift opening of a door unless you’re stuck with a jammed lock. A jammed lock can cause multiple issues.

So, to help you out of this, we have found some easy ways to fix a jammed lock.

Let’s get into it!

Different Door Knob Problems

Some of the common problems you may face are:

The Door Knob Turns But It Won’t Open

The first common problem you may face is the doorknob is turning but you’re unable to open it.

One of the main issues is that the knob is not interacting properly with the spring of the lock. This creates an obstruction and does not allow your door to open.

Steps to follow:

  1. Take off the door knob from the door
  2. Remove the knob along with the thru spindle
  3. The gap where the thru spindle is inserted, twist your flat screwdriver (or another tool) into it
  4. This should retract your handle

Now, if your latch retracts too, there may be some problem with the thru spindle. See, if there’s any damage and then, replace the damaged parts.

If your latch does not retract, the problem is with the latch housing. It can be in anything, like the spring of the lock. We suggest calling a locksmith and changing the entire latch housing.

The Door Lock Is Stuck in an Unlocked Position

Having your door lock stuck in an open position can leave your house unsafe for breaking in. Before you can fix the problem, you need to figure out what caused the problem in the first place.

The cylinder of the lock could be broken, so your key won’t move inside. Also, the internals of the lock might have rusted if it is an old lock.

However, it can be a problem with something else other than the lock itself. The door might be misaligned, which makes your lock not work. It can also be a problem with the key. The key might be damaged or rusted, so try another key before deciding to change the lock.

The Deadbolt is Stuck in a Locked Position

Another issue of jammed lock you may face is that the deadbolt lock is stuck in a locked position. It has the same checking methods as a lock stuck in an open position given above.

Some easy tips are:

  1. Tighten the hinge screws properly to avoid misalignment of the lock latch and strike plate.
  2. Tighten all the screws attaching the lock to the door, along with tightening screws of the strike plate within the door jamb.
  3. In the case of the old deadbolt, try coating the key with spray graphite. Insert this key inside the lock, shake it up and down to lubricate the stuck deadbolt.

The Door Knob’s Lock Button is Stuck

If you are facing this problem, do not worry. We’ve got some quick solutions that can help you out.

  1. Push the button in, hold it, and then release fast. This works most of the time. Make sure you release your finger fast without backing off.
  2. Try to keep pushing the button in fast and continuously. It might get unstuck at any moment.
  3. You can also try shaking the door handle until the button gets unstuck. Make sure you do not shake the handle with too much force as you might break it.

If the problem continues, try finding a professional locksmith to help you with your problem.
