Long gone are the days when pizza was considered a luxury food. Remember the days of gorging on pizza at Nirula’s joints? Well, that was back in the nineties. Since then we have witnessed the era of Pizza Hut and now, Domino’s Pizza as the go-to destination for pizza and garlic bread!
Domino’s has caused a disruption in the fast-food chain industry by providing finger-licious and appetizing pizzas at prices that do not burn a hole in our pockets. Its brand popularity touched new heights after 2017.
As per CNN Business, innovative tech, creative ordering methods coupled with intelligent marketing techniques cumulated in Domino’s helped it win over it’s biggest competitor Pizza Hut with increased sales in the financial year of 2017.
But, is it 5 on 5 on every scale? Maybe not on hygiene.
Domino’s Might Not Be As Hygienic As We Thought!
On 1st May 2020, a video surfaced on Instagram where 2 men can be seen transferring the dough from a loading truck to a Domino’s India unit in Goa.
The video busted the reality behind that tasty and hygienic-looking pizza that we love to eat and flaunt on Instagram stories.
The video, originally posted by Hiya Jaiswal, was shot on 23rd May 2020 in Porvorim, Goa. It features two men, who are not wearing any sort of protective gear such as hairnet, gloves, or masks and can be seen unloading a tray of dough from a truck and then placing it in a Domino’s unit.
The tray is not covered by any plastic or protective sheet. It is coming in contact with its immediate atmosphere which has dust, small insects, and n number of germs.
And it is all happening in the times of COVID-19 when utmost precautions need to be taken.
The dough which would be used in making food for customers is being handled with absolute negligence, without paying any heed to basic hygiene practices.
Though we have approached Domino’s for clarification, they haven’t given any official statement regarding this matter.

How Should Pizza Dough Be Ideally Transferred?
As per the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) guidelines, while transporting anything from one unit to another, it is important to ensure that food or raw ingredients are kept in a closed vehicle with closed containers. In this case, this very basic guideline has been violated.
A sealed container is important to protect food from contamination by keeping it covered at all times.
Moreover, FSSAI has laid down a few basic guidelines to ensure the safe delivery of food during the COVID-19 pandemic. Delivery of food items while wearing essential protective items such as masks and gloves is essential to ensure minimum contact.
However, in this video, the men who are transferring the dough to the Domino’s Unit are not complying with this basic requirement either. Moreover, the person in the Domino’s outlet who is receiving the tray from outside didn’t raise any objection either.
This incident raises concerns and questions on the credibility of Domino’s. Just clean outlets and quick delivery are not sufficient when you are operating a chain as vast as this. The process needs to be clean and credible from the very beginning.
Does Heating Pizza At Higher Temperatures In An Oven Kill The Bacteria?
According to Food Expert Susan Lindman, heating pizza at the oven temperature does a pretty good job of killing bacteria and germs. The temperature which is used by Domino’s, i.e. 350-450 degrees, not only kills the microbes but also considerably reduces the harmful effects of any toxins produced.
But this does not mean that the brand should show such negligence on its part. Even if heating at high temperatures kills the harmful microbes, this does not give anyone the freedom to tamper with the basic guidelines.
People rely on Domino’s when it comes to taste, quality, and of course, hygiene. It provides a quick service and has at least one unit in almost every locality, providing easy accessibility to its customers.
But, this kind of service tends to reduce its reputation and credibility. We hope that it learns a lesson before people lose their trust in the brand completely.
