The Jadavpur University ragging incident was a tragic one where an 18-year-old first-year student passed away after he jumped from the second floor of his hostel on 9th August 2023.

The victim’s body was found nude after he jumped from the balcony and was due to a horrifying ragging incident. Soon after, the Kolkata Police arrested an ex-student Sourabh Chowdhury who confessed his involvement in the ragging of the victim.

Chowdhury although having already completed his MSc in Mathematics in 2022 at the university, continued to stay at the college hostel along with a few other seniors.

Now, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has submitted an almost 46-page long report to the JU administration where 85 people, including hostel inmates, university officials, hostel superintendents, and security guards were questioned not only on the recent case but the excessive ragging and abuse of students in the hostel.

As per the report, the victim was ragged, sexually abused, and mentally and physically harassed by several seniors leading him to take the tragic step of jumping from the balcony. Here are some things the report has revealed:

According to reports, the committee also stated that even though as many as 31 complaints of ragging had been filed with the admins in the last 13 years, however, action was taken against just 7 students in all those years.
