The year 2020 witnessed questions beginning with ‘Why’ the most as compared to previous years. It is safe to say that 2020 felt less like an actual year, and more like a decade.
With COVID-19 dominating the entire world, life hasn’t been smooth. Not to forget the loss of millions of lives.
COVID And Its Repercussions
The health and economic crisis that shook us all led to most of the Google searches being inclined towards questions relating to the same.
Hence, the ‘Why’ became central to the majority of the searches and remained on our fingertips as well as minds.
As for stress and deteriorating mental health, Google too couldn’t remain unaffected. The year’s top trends show plenty of stress as is.
‘Coronavirus’ and ‘Election Results’ were the top 2 globally searched keywords in 2020. As for the personalities, President-elect ‘Joe Biden’ topped the searches.
Loss And Coping With It
Not far behind were ‘stimulus check’ and ‘unemployment’ which come as no shocker. ‘Bryant and Floyd’, as well as actors ‘Naya Rivera’ and ‘Chadwick Boseman’ were among the most searched lives lost.
The most Googled word was ‘insomnia’, which points at the terrible effect the pandemic has had on all of us. Coping mechanisms too were searched widely and ‘How to help acid reflux’ topped the list among them.
Optimistic Approach
Despite all the loss and conundrum circling COVID-19, some searches paved the way for a ray of hope and cast a glimmer of optimism.
According to the report given out by Google, it can be seen that people felt more inclined towards a positive change for the upcoming year (2021).
‘How to be anti-racist’ was searched more than ‘How to be a millionaire,’ and ‘How to be an ally’ was searched more than ‘How to be an influencer’ which displays some sort of constructive outlook.
Google searches for ‘Black Lives Matter’ became more prominent than ever before, as awareness about racism and its hold over the world became obvious.

Helping Hands
Not just curious, people were quite willing to help out if and when needed. 2020’s Google searches saw a massive increase in people looking for ways to help others and render their support in causes, social, communal, and environmental.
‘How to help Australia fires,’ ‘How to help Black Lives Matter’ and ‘How to help during coronavirus’ topped the searches concerning help. What’s more, “‘How to donate’ was searched more than ‘How to save money’, which speaks about people’s good intent quite clearly.
‘Nepotism’ and ‘plasma therapy’ also found their way into the top searches. While the memes also became a substantial part of our virus-infested lives. ‘Binod’ topped the meme search list.
‘What is keto’ also became one of the most searched keywords as awareness about food and dietary habits spread even more.
While the entire world has been looking for signs for everything to go back to normal, many people have searched ‘How to change the world’ and therefore, put the greater good above personal good.
‘Protest near me’ was also widely searched in 2020 since the world saw various protests being initiated and hearts being ignited. Pet lovers searched ‘How to foster a dog’ and so much so, that it became one of the most searched questions.
Furthermore, ‘How to be a teacher’ was searched more than ever in 2020 since lots of parents had to educate their children all by themselves, at home with only a little aid from online educators.
People also searched ‘support small business’ a lot more than usual. The how-to-make questions were led by ‘How to make hand sanitizer’ and ‘How to make a mask’ as well as ‘How to make whipped coffee’ (Dalgona coffee).
