The tragic incident of 19-year-old Delhi University student Nikhil Chauhan being stabbed to death by four people on Sunday, 18th June 2023 has raised a lot of questions. The killing took place outside of Aryabhatta College in South Campus and was apparently a revenge carried out by two students Rahul and Yash as per reports.
According to DCP South West Delhi Manoj C “About a week ago, one of the students in college misbehaved with his girlfriend. On Sunday, at 12:30 pm, the main accused from the same college along with 3 others met Nikhil outside the college gate and stabbed him.”
He further added “When police reached there, it was found that the victim is Nikhil Chauhan – a first year student of the School of Open Learning. Further investigation revealed that a week ago, Chauhan had a brawl with Rahul and Yash. Yesterday, Rahul, Yash and others came here to seek revenge. They stabbed Nikhil Chauhan. We have arrested two people – Rahul and his associate Haroon. We have identified others as well. We will arrest them too.”
The victim coming from the Paschim Vihar region of Delhi was pursuing BA (Hons) in Political Science from the School of Open Learning.
Student’s Father Speaks Out
Clips of Nikhil’s father Sanjay breaking down outside of the police station were circulated by media pages, leading to many being heartbroken over the father who untimely lost his son. Speaking with the media though, it was his disheartening comments about the situation and lost hopes with his son that really are heartwrenching.
He spoke with ANI about how the police had not really informed him much about anything saying “Police have told us nothing so far. We did not have a word with the Police till now. Yesterday at 12 pm, I received a call from the students who took my son to the hospital. Police kept these students here (Police Station) throughout the night.”

He also spoke about how he got to know what happened as “I received a call around 12-12.30 pm… I was only told he had been hit by someone… When I reached the college, I found that he was dead. I was shocked. He had left home to meet his friends and was going to return home in a few hours. I went to Safdarjung Hospital and found he had been stabbed brutally… There was blood all over his scooter. My son was innocent.”
Sanjay also stated that while they knew about the fight with the accused last week, they didn’t think this would happen “We knew he was in a fight a week ago over a girl. We supported him because he did nothing wrong and was helping his friend. We didn’t know he would be attacked… Police haven’t arrested anyone. I want justice for my son.”
But while they knew of the fight, they didn’t really know the accused said the victim’s father “I do not know the accused, the police said one of the accused had been caught. 10 to 15 boys had come to kill Nikhil, some had come on bikes and some had come by metro. He was stabbed near the heart and he died on the spot due to bleeding.”
Furthermore, he called out the college authorities too for not taking the correct steps and either informing him instantly or being vigilant about security near the campus saying “It all happened right outside the college. Someone should have stopped those boys.”
Nikhil’s father also shared future aspirations for Nikhil they’d been planning for but in the wake of the tragedy, it was all for naught now.
He stated “Some time ago Nikhil had received a call from Mumbai to do modelling but at that time his exam was going on, due to which I had asked him to appear for the exam first. Nikhil’s first-semester exam was over and he had come in the second semester. I was preparing to send him to Mumbai very soon but all of that has failed.”
