Electric Stove vs. Gas Stove – Which One Do You Prefer?

-

Both electric and gas stoves have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you cook and the way you cook.  People usually decide between an electric and a gas stove based on their previous cooking experience and what they first learned to cook on. However, new chefs may benefit from the versatile nature of a flame-heated gas stove, while families with young children may opt for the safer electric stove.

Deciding on a new stove involves comparing the benefits and drawbacks, as well as the initial purchase cost and operating costs of both gas and electric. We have compared the two types to help you make the right decision for your kitchen.

Installation

Gas stoves require a gas line. If you do not currently have a gas line to your kitchen, it is necessary to weigh in the cost of having one installed if you decide on this option. While electric stoves are simpler to install.

Running costs

Though it varies by region, electric stoves are often slightly more expensive to purchase than gas. However, depending on your preferences, it may be worth the extra investment. The average electric stove costs from $440 to $2900, whereas gas stoves range between $450 to $2200.

The cost of operating an electric stove can be significantly higher than its gas counterpart, depending on location. In general, gas costs less than electricity, thus running a gas stove can cost up to 30 percent less.

An electric cooker will often use fewer energy units, but, depending on your location, if the cost of electricity is higher than gas, it will still end up costing more to run. You can also contact your local stove repair technicians to get an idea of the repair costs of the two types of stoves.

Temperature control and cooking style

The heat in an electric stove is usually more evenly distributed and drier than that of a gas stove, offering more reliable results when baking. If you enjoy baking, consider an electric stove. If you are a budding chef, a gas stove’s precision will give you more control over your flame and cooking temperature. Gas stoves often respond instantly to temperature change settings ensuring that you have more control.

Cleaning

Modern electric stoves often have a smooth ceramic or glass surface that is easy to clean, while most gas stoves are more tricky to clean. Young families with children may benefit from an electric stove that is quick and easy to wipe clean with a dishcloth.

Safety

Gas stoves feature an open flame, increasing the risk of fire. Electric stoves don’t remove the risk of fire completely but they are considered to be the safer option. With a gas stove, there is also a risk of gas leaks if it is not properly connected to a gas line.

Repair

Both gas and electric stoves require consistent maintenance and repair. It is a good idea to research the price of replacement parts for each option and take that cost into consideration when choosing a stove to purchase. It is always recommended to contact Hamilton appliance repair experts to help you whenever you need.

A gas stove’s versatile nature may be better suited to an experimental and aspiring chef; while a safer, easy to clean electric stove may be the better option for a family with young children.
