It started in 2011 when Kolkata’s police constable used his savings of Rs. 4 lakh to build a school for children from the Sabar tribe.

Anup Mukherjee, a police constable by profession is believed to be no less than a messiah who wants to secure the lives of these children.

He used his savings to build the school which ran in two classrooms and it had only 20 students.

This police constable believed in uplifting the condition of children belonging to a marginalized tribe which has often been linked with criminal offenses.

Anup Mukherjee has changed a lot of lives

He says, “After learning about the plight of Sabars, I wanted to do something to alleviate their condition. I felt that providing education to the children of this community would surely help them to transform their lives.

Who are these Sabar people?

The Sabar people are one of the Adivasi of Munda ethnic group tribe. They live mainly in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.

He was acquainted with the pitiful condition of Sabar tribe from his grandfather. He has always been curious to learn more so as to what led them to commit crimes.

The tribe has been classified as one of the ‘criminal tribes’ under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 during the British period.

However, the tribal people are still living in a perpetual state of poverty and are driven to commit thefts and crimes.

How is the school trying to educate children?

Mostly, the children are aged between 3 to 14 years and are schooled till class 4th. They make sure that the children join the local-government higher secondary schools for further studies.

Currently, there are 112 students and the school has nine classrooms with basic amenities. The school provides food, residence, uniform and education-related material to all the students.

There are four teachers employed who share the responsibilities of the school and happily want to teach the students.

In August this year, he received a special honor at The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence 2018 for his remarkable efforts. He has also got funds from a US-based charitable institution and other people. This helped him to improve the facilities provided to the students.

Mukherjee believes that there is no greater reward than the happiness he brings to the children that are studying in his school.

I think that he is an inspiration for the young generation and a perfect example of how we should work for the betterment of our society.
