Cheatings in exams are nothing new, students often use harmless, simple methods many times since school to get answers during exams in order to at least pass.
Usually, though it’s at most whispering to another student sitting beside one frantically asking them if they know the answer to a particularly difficult question and nothing even comes of it.
However, there are also some of the biggest cheating scandals that go beyond these general ways and are on a whole other level itself.
This is currently what the Telangana Public Service Commission (TSPSC) is investigating into and what could potentially be the biggest or most expensive cheating scams of the country where several civil servant candidates used ChatGPT to cheat their exams.
What Is This Cheating Scam?
It all began on March 14th, 2023 when 7 people were arrested by the Hyderabad police for their involvement in a paper leak for the Telangana State Public Service Commission’s (TSPSC) Assistant Engineer (Civil) examination that was held on 5th March.
Soon after a Special Investigating Team (SIT) took over the investigation and in the latest finds claimed that one of the seven accused used the much talked about ChatGPT, a generative AI tool.
As per a TOI report, the SIT found out that the accused, Poola Ramesh, a divisional engineer with the Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited carried out the cheating scam for the assistant executive engineer (AEE) and divisional accounts officer (DAO) exams.

The accused allegedly used ChatGPT to get answers and shared them with the candidates through Bluetooth earbuds while they wrote the exam. Ramesh planned to share answers with 7 aspirants for two exams held on January 22 and February 26 2023 respectively.
According to reports, each candidate was told to pay Rs. 40 lakhs for the answers and in total the accused was planning to earn around Rs. 10 crores by helping 35 more candidates cheat in their exams.
The whole plan for the scam involved a principal at the exam center sharing photos of the question papers with Ramesh sent around 10 minutes after the exam started.
Ramesh would then use ChatGPT to get the correct answers which he then shared with the candidates through Bluetooth. As per reports, a police officer said, “Ramesh sold the leaked question paper to more than 30 candidates for 25 lakh to 30 lakh each.”
By the time the police caught on to the accused person, he had allegedly earned a whopping Rs. 1.1 crore already. Ramesh has not yet been arrested.
