Just a few days ago we had the gaffe by US President Joe Biden, where he interchanged Ukrainians with Iranians while giving a speech. So it was only fair that Indian television, not wanting to be left behind would do something to catch up in the race.

Since yesterday social media has been losing its mind over the now viral clip of an Indian news channel show where you have a host, you have 2 participants and then you have the whole hilarity of a mistaken identity.

Feels more like a scene out of a slapstick Bollywood comedy film than something that would actually happen. But it actually happened and in between the very real and sobering news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this felt like some respite.

Which is why the internet has been going crazy over the whole Indian news TV host and the ‘Mr McAdams’ situation.

What Happened?

Rahul Shivshankar on Times Now, an Indian news TV channel was hosting a debate around the Ukraine crisis. As is usual the debate had two guests to speak on the topic, one being Bohdan Nahaylo, chief editor of Kyiv Post and the other being the now famous Daniel McAdams, executive director of the Ron Paul Institute and US foreign policy commentator.

The show called ‘India Upfront’ was meant to discuss what is happening in Ukraine right now and get varied opinions on what should happen next and more.

However, the ultimate thing to happen happened when the names of the two people apparently got mixed up and Mr. McAdams had Nahaylo placed on him while Nahaylo was listed as Mr McAdams. During the course of the show, Shivshankar told McAdams to “just take a bit of a chill pill”.

Mr. Nahaylo very understandably is flustered with the angry tone of the host and says that he can’t relax because his country is at war right now.

To this Shivshankar says, “Mr McAdams if you are so concerned about Ukrainians… get off the fence and send your forces and put boots on the ground. Don’t lecture us here in India, okay? I am not gonna hear your lecture. And if you have really problems (sic), then go tell the US president Mr Biden who flashes… who flashes his fancy credentials.”

Mind you Shivshankar keeps referring to the speaker as Mr. McAdams, not realising that there has been a huge mixup.

In the midst of all this the actual Mr. McAdams has been trying to pipe in and clear up the confusion. Eventually, he just bursts out to say “I’m not talking… It’s the other guy who’s talking!”

Shivshankar still not understanding the situation believes that the other voice is from the Ukrainian editor and says that “Mr McAdams” had “gone completely ballistic” and that he should “go fight alongside Ukrainians if he felt so strongly about the war”.

Mr McAdams then says that “Dear host, I haven’t said a word yet. I don’t know why you’re yelling at me.” To this Shivshankar tries to clear up that “I am not yelling at you, I am talking about Mr McAdams.”

And finally, finally the truth comes out when the real McAdams says that “I AM Mr McAdams! I am Mr McAdams and I haven’t said a word, so stop yelling at me!”

In a swift turn Shivshankar goes quiet, now ultimately realising what was happening and apologises for the confusion.

Of course, the social media had the time of their life, finally getting their hands on this goldmine that is just begging to be made into memes.

For all that it’s worth, this certainly gave us all a moment of levity amidst all the chaos and somber news constantly being shown.
