2020 has been hands down the worst year for all the crazy cine lovers out there. Coronavirus has wreaked havoc in the world and affected every sphere of a human’s life like never before, and the cinema world couldn’t spare itself either.
But after surviving the lockdown, the film industry is finally gearing up to pave a path for itself even amid the frightful pandemic which is still keeping everyone on their toes.
Though the film industry in India is about to resume again with a new zeal, there will be lots of challenges that might come in its way.
How Viable Is Social Distancing?
While learning the safety protocol of social distancing all this while, a question usually pops up in my mind- how would it be possible for the process of filmmaking to go smoothly alongside the implementation of social distancing?
In the words of Bollywood actor-producer, Sanjay Suri, “A film crew, including the director and stars to technicians and makeup artists, work in close ‘physical proximity’ round the clock under one roof. And sometimes even in suffocating spaces”.
How I wish the film industry could just go the corporate way and opt to shrug the crowd load off the sets to some extent while following the method of working from home. But who can work from home? Director? Camera-person? Choreographer? Or the actors? A sheer disappointment!
So, in that case, only certain precautions and awareness can help the entertainment industry stand back on its feet again.

Question On Cinematic Intimacy
Gone are the days when the blossoming flowers, necking swans, or the shaking bush were comprehensively used as an illustrative of sexual intimacy between two people on the silver screen. Now, people have no problem with reality being shown the way it is.
But the ruthless COVID-19 has some conflicting plans regarding physical closeness while shooting.
The ‘Piku’ director, Shoojit Sircar’s Instagram post reflects upon his thoughts on the dilemma of shooting intimate scenes post the lockdown.
Now, speculations hint at Bollywood’s forgotten methods of replicating lustful desires and emotions without resorting to sensuous scenes to make a comeback and anchor the sailing ship.
Broader Perspective Of Industry Members
Actress Dia Mirza said, “The entire process of making a film is intimate. So many people, all coming together to create moment after moment in unity and synchronized effort… How will all that change? Will we be masked and wear gloves as a crew? Only time will tell.”
Her words stand true as reel intimacy cannot solely be called a worrisome aspect of shooting. Action sequences, dance sequences, scenes comprising a large cast, and several other unsettling instances could be highlighted for that matter.
Amid all the uncertainties, a silver lining is the hope of the veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy about the future of cinema.
“The impact of the pandemic will be there. But man is a creature of readjustment. There will be some hits, some blows, and some new adventurous things might happen. I have great faith in our endeavors. Somewhere out of all this chaos, something will happen,” Sippy said.
After counting in all the possible hurdles, we cross our fingers and eagerly wait for our beloved Indian cinema to stand true to its saying-
“चलती का नाम ज़िन्दगी “
