In the history of Bollywood’s superhero movies, Mr India was the first one. There have been many since then, but none (other than Krrish) was good enough to make its mark.
While this 1987’s Shekhar Kapur directed movie became iconic because of Anil Kapoor’s acting, Sridevi’s Hawa Hawai and Amrish Puri’s Mogambo, there have been several rumours of a sequel and remake of this movie, once we stepped into the ‘era of remakes’.
Well, they were rumours, until recently when the confirmed news came out from the production house itself.
The Announcement
On Feb 17th, Ali Abbas Zafar announced that he is working on the script of Mr India.
Excited to partner with @ZeeStudios_ for an epic trilogy #MrIndia! It is a huge responsibility to carry forward an iconic character loved by everyone. Currently, working on the script, no actor has been locked till now. Once we lock the first draft of the script, casting begins!

For those of you who have no clue who he is, and those of you who aren’t Salman Khan fans – he is the director of movies like Bharat, Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan and a few more.
With the cast not yet decided, he confirms that the movie will be a trilogy.
To confirm his announcement on Twitter, ZeeStudios retweeted Zafar’s tweet.
Proud to announce an epic trilogy #MrIndia! @aliabbaszafar @BoneyKapoor https://t.co/mWeA8N7VXS

Not exactly sure what he has in mind, but the idea of making a trilogy while reimaging a cult movie shows that the storyline will have changes with a superhero universe of his own.
“THIS IS NOT A ‘PART 2’ OR A REMAKE OF THE OLDER FILM AS RECENTLY REPORTED IN SOME SECTIONS OF THE MEDIA, BUT A RE-IMAGINING OF THE ICONIC CLASSIC,” STATED SHARIQ PATEL, CEO, ZEE STUDIOS.
Although people were previously getting excited on the reports of Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh being in talks for the film, Ali denied them all saying that it is too early to talk about the cast.

Along with congratulatory messages, there was also the fear that he will cast Salman Khan in this one as well, resulting in Zafar’s tweet getting a fair bit of backlash.

Being a fan of the #Sridevi, the Biggestest Superstar Universe has seen, this for me is no exciting news. Give me #MrIndia the original Masterpiece Anyday. Open to a 3D version of the same too. Hope that happens someday. #SrideviLivesForever #SrideviIsImmortal @SrideviBKapoor

Not excited at all for this one. Yet, all the best. IMHO, even Boney ji himself shudnt reboot Mr India. Even if it's an ode to The Hawa Hawaai #Sridevi, I wud prefer a 3D re release of the original film & a separate behind scenes / compilation of edited out scenes

Personally, as someone who has watched Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan and hence didn’t dare to watch Bharat, I am still wondering why the cult classic needs to be re-imagined in the first place.
Shekhar Kapur’s reaction
Like me, many have asked the same question – ‘why’; and some even went on to ask the original’s creator- Shekhar Kapur to do something about it.
Turns out, Kapur himself had no idea about it.
“NO ONE HAS EVEN ASKED ME OR MENTIONED TO ME ABOUT THIS FILM CALLED MR INDIA 2. I CAN ONLY GUESS THAT THEY ARE USING THE TITLE TO GET A BIG WEEKEND. FOR THEY CANNOT USE THE CHARACTERS/STORY WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE ORIGINAL CREATORS OF THE FILM.” – SHEKHAR KAPUR
No one has even asked me or mentioned to me about this film called Mr India 2. I can only guess that they using the title to get a big weekend. For they cannot use the characters/story without permission from the original creators of the film. https://t.co/Set5eDH63j

Since it has already been announced and we can’t do anything about it, all we can do is pray – pray that this doesn’t turn out to be a Karzzzz (with four ‘z’s,) that starred Himesh Reshammiya and his wig while he tried to remake the 1980’s original.
