Packing for a vacation often involves choosing the right suitcase, but have you ever considered how its colour might affect your travel experience?
While black-coloured luggage is the go-to choice for many travellers owing to its classic look and practicality, experts warn that this common preference might actually increase the risk of baggage mishandling or loss.
In other words, your sleek, jet-black suitcase might be playing an unintentional game of hide-and-seek at the baggage claim.
The Popularity Of Black Luggage And Its Downsides
According to a survey by luggage brand Eminent, more than 40% of travellers choose black hard-sided suitcases. The appeal of black lies in its timeless aesthetic, resistance to visible stains, and suitability for any trip. However, travel expert Jamie Frazer from US summer camp Wild Packs explains that this overwhelming popularity makes black suitcases particularly difficult to identify.
“Hard-sided black suitcases are the most common luggage type globally, making them both the hardest to identify and the most likely to go missing,” Frazer says. Essentially, your suitcase is just one in an army of clones, marching its way down the baggage carousel, blending in like a spy in a black-tie event.
Spotting Your Own Suitcase
The sheer number of black suitcases circulating on baggage carousels leads to frequent mix-ups. Travelers often pick up the wrong bag by mistake, and in some cases, bags are left behind simply because their owners couldn’t spot them in time.
The confusion is further exacerbated during peak travel seasons when hundreds of similar-looking suitcases arrive at once. You might find yourself in a staring contest with a dozen identical bags, second-guessing if the one in front of you is really yours or a doppelgänger.
Frazer advises that if you’re travelling with a black suitcase, arriving early at the airport can be beneficial.
“This allows airline staff extra time to properly tag and load your bag, reducing the chance of it being mishandled or misplaced,” he explains. Or, if you enjoy living on the edge, you can just wait for someone else to mistakenly grab your suitcase and hope they bring it back.
Easy Ways To Personalise Your Luggage
For travellers who want to reduce the chances of losing their luggage, opting for colourful or uniquely designed suitcases is a smart choice. Bright-coloured luggage or patterned suitcases stand out in a sea of black, making identification quick and easy.

However, if you prefer sticking to a black suitcase, there are still ways to make it distinctive. Frazer recommends using bold luggage tags, colourful ribbons, or custom-designed stickers.
“These small yet effective touches can help ensure your bag doesn’t get lost in the crowd,” he says.
Want to go the extra mile? Attach a neon-green bow, a flashing LED tag, or perhaps a sticker that says, “This is not your bag unless your name is also mine.”
Secure Your Luggage With Identification Tags
Another essential precaution is attaching a clear and durable luggage tag with your contact information. While including your name, phone number, and email is advisable, security experts warn against listing your home address, as it can pose a safety risk. Instead, consider using an alternative contact like your workplace address or simply relying on digital tracking solutions.
Frazer emphasises the importance of personalisation: “Taking a little extra time to make your suitcase recognisable can save you from unnecessary stress at the baggage carousel.” Think of it as giving your bag a personality—after all, nobody wants to be mistaken for someone else at an airport, least of all your luggage.
While black luggage remains a stylish and practical choice, it does come with certain risks. Identifying your suitcase in a sea of identical bags can be challenging, leading to mix-ups and potential loss. By adding personalised markers, choosing vibrant alternatives, or ensuring clear identification tags, travellers can avoid unnecessary baggage hassles.
After all, let’s face it—after a long flight, the last thing you want is to engage in a luggage scavenger hunt while half-asleep. Make your suitcase stand out, and it will always find its way back to you, no dramatic airport chases are required.
