It was a Sunday night. One of the worst Sunday nights in my life till date. The pains started just after lunch and I put it off thinking them to be nothing but acidity. After all, the Sunday brunch was a pretty heavy one. However, by the time evening came, I had to be rushed to a hospital.
At the hospital, I was diagnosed with something known as an acute appendicitis.
What is acute appendicitis?
Through my red haze of pain, the doctors reassuringly explained that this was a condition where a little part of our intestines called the appendix which is normally dormant, gets infected and thus gets inflamed causing a lot of pain to the patient. It could be particularly lethal if the inflamed appendix ruptured or burst leading to a medical emergency known as peritonitis wherein the infected contents of the appendix spill out into the sterile abdomen. Thankfully, my condition was just restricted to the inflammation and not the rupturing.
How do you know if you have acute appendicitis?
Well, like the name suggests, it is an acute condition. It is often characterised by severe stomach pain specially around the belly button region. Some patients also have nausea and vomitting.
Features of infection like fever may also be present prior to the onset of the stomach pain. In case you have any of these features, you need to consult a doctor, preferably a gastroenterologist immediately. For further reference, here is a list of some of the really good gastroenterologists in Chennai.
How to combat this emergency?
Like in every emergency, you need a very good health care team who’re ready to take prompt action. In my case, i was blessed with the expertise of some remarkable doctors who dealt my case with superior efficiency. I needed an operation. Naturally, I was very scared. But the team there did wonders to allay my anxiety.
Initially, I was rehydrated and they started some antibiotics. Following that, the surgeons performed something known as a ‘laparoscopic appendectomy’. The good doctors explained every procedure to me. They said they would be making some small nicks in my abdomen and remove the inflamed appendix which was causing so much trouble.
Believe it or not, I was fit and fine within 3 days after the operation. It was my first experience in a hospital and someone has correctly remarked, “First impression is the last impression.” I will without a doubt, rank it as one of the best gastroenterology hospitals in Chennai. I hope they keep up the great work!

Also, since it was a laparoscopy, there is almost no mark of surgery on my skin except some small nicks. I can pretty much rock that crop top I bought at the last sale!
Inflammation of the appendix is a relatively common condition and there is almost no mortality associated with it. With recent medical advances, it is even easier to treat this. There is absolutely no need to worry in case you are diagnosed with acute appendicitis. In case you are wondering, there is also no restriction on your daily lifestyle once you have been operated and have survived the post operative period without any significant events. You can pretty much do whatever you like and most importantly, from some months after, eat whatever you like too!
Take it from someone who’s been through the same and come out healthier than ever from the experience!
