Around 9 pm IST, people started to have certain issues with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Suddenly, it all went out, people rushed from platform to platform, trying to see which ones were down and which ones were still working.
Turned, all three, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook were down, extremely down, and even a few hours past it they have still not resumed function.
According to reports, this is not just limited to India but is being seen worldwide. Users of any of these platforms are unable to load the pages, any page, send messages, see profiles, basically, it is all down, even Facebook’s Oculus virtual reality platform and business communications tool Workplace.
What Caused The Outage?
Apparently, as per sources, the outage is due to a DNS (domain name server) fail. Tech Crunch explains it as “this is the naming structure that forms the web’s infrastructure. So, if you try to navigate to facebook.com right now, the internet won’t know where to find facebook.com.”
DownDetector, an online website that shows whether a platform or site is working or not, has apparently seen over 20,000 reports till yet about Facebook not working. While WhatsApp and Instagram saw over 30,000 and 18,000 reports respectively.
Both the Instagram and WhatsApp profiles on Twitter have posted about the current situation.
While the platforms are down, there has also been a decrease in Facebook stock by around 5.70% on NASDAQ. Interestingly this comes close on the heels of whistleblower Frances Haugen having just leaked confidential internal documents to the Wall Street Journal and Facebook currently under the spotlight by the US Senate.
Haugen had revealed documents to authorities showing how Facebook was aware of the harmful effects its products had on the mental health of users, especially children and promoted hate.
People Rushing To Twitter
In these trying times, many people turned to their seemingly only saviour and that is Twitter. Flooding Twitter with #ServerDown and #FacebookDown, Facebook and Instagram, people took to using the only way they know how to show their emotions… memes.
Memes and jokes abound with people having no other platform to vent out about how all three of the most popular social media platforms are down at the exact same time.
While many pointed out this was all Facebook’s own fault for being too greedy and wanting both Instagram and WhatsApp under its banner, others joked about how this was a literal wet dream for Twitter.

As of publishing, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are still down and are yet to get back up again. Lord only knows the kind of flood these platforms will see once they are working again.
