India has been majorly hit by corruption charges in various sectors and scams involving tons of crores. Filling pockets of some and depriving others of it, such has been the work of the country’s political and economic functionaries. Here are some of the ‘popular’ ones, though this list is in no way exhaustive, merely indicative.
Coal Block allocation: Popularly called the Coalgate, it basically is a political scam involving auctioning the nation’s coal deposits based on corruption. The UPA government has been accused of allocating the coal blocks through non competitive bidding, favouring public sector entities and private companies.
Amount involved: Rs. 1.86 lakh crore
Names involved: PM Manmohan Singh, Naveen Jindal etc.

2G spectrum auction: 122 telecom licenses were issued by the Government for 2G wireless technology to various companies. The state auditor alleges that the government’s entire process for this auction “lacked transparency and was undertaken in an arbitrary, unfair and inequitable manner” giving ‘unfair advantage’ to some companies against others.
Amount involved: Rs. 1.76 lakh crore
Names involved: A Raja, Unitech Ltd. etc.
Year: 2008
Common wealth games scam: India was organizing the Common Wealth games in 2010 and the organizing committee was accused of misappropriation of funds, extreme corruption, favoring certain private companies for personal gains and infrastructural compromise. It was a matter of national shame.
Amount involved: Rs. 90 crore
Names involved: Suresh Kalmadi, Shiela Dixit etc.
Year: 2010
Other shameful scams in India were the Adarsh society scam, corruption in the Devas Antrix deal and the Chopper scam.
