Becoming a mom can be one of the most exciting and terrifying things on this planet. Finding out you are pregnant either the first time— or even fourth time— is a wave of emotions. The journey of motherhood is a constant roller coaster. It pushes your body through sleepless nights and tears, or moments that make your heart leap for joy, and everything else in between. Everyone around you will make it their life’s mission to tell you what you may be doing right or wrong with your child. In all reality, what you need is a support system of like-minded women who all encourage each other and want the best for their children.
Jennie Monness
Like all first-time moms, Jennie Monness was utterly overwhelmed with the birth of her first child. With 12 years of experience working in early childhood development, she thought she had all of the tools she needed to take on motherhood. But then, she realized that no amount of knowledge or planning will ever prepare you for having children of your own.
Before her first child was born, Monness set out with the idea of creating a blog to help other moms out there connect and grow with their children. By having a background in psychology and education, Monness learned how to encourage children’s natural abilities through meaningful play. Monness asserts,
I know you can’t exactly train a child to prepare for a broken heart, but we can help our children to build tools, to recognize emotions, to accept and trust themselves to feel whole without the praise and approval of others, this is what embodies my parenting approach – building self-efficacy.
Through this idea and understanding of children, Mo’Mommies was born.
Mo’Mommies Blog
The Mo’Mommies Blog blossomed into a safe space for women to connect and share their stories of motherhood. In her blog, Monness is open and honest about all aspects of parenting. She shares her triumphs and struggles and educates how to connect and grow with your child in posts like “Be an Ally.”
Monness also loves to share the essential “mom” products that you just can’t live without. She knew that her journey had only just begun when she started her blog, and eventually, the perfect opportunity fell into her lap to expand.
Union Square Play
Monness ended up meeting a mom in a class she was teaching, and the stars aligned perfectly for the opportunity to start Union Square Play (USP). This began as a physical space where children could learn through thoughtful play, sensory, music, and creative classes.
USP is not only a place for children; it is a space where Monness wanted other moms to feel a sense of “home away from home.” There are also support groups, classes, and thoughtful programs for adults and children alike. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the social life had to transition to social distancing.
From Face-to-Face to Screen Time.
USP transformed from a face-to-face community to an online society, still offering the same support and play, just from afar. The pandemic brought on more of a need for moms to connect with other parents and adapt to society’s changes. This virtual shift grew the network of strong and hard-working moms willing to share their own stories and join the tribe of Mo’Mommies in the USP group online.
Every new mom—and even the veteran moms—sometimes need a little extra support. Whether it is just another mom to connect with, or expert advice, the USP mom tribe has your back. Virtual sessions offer support for first-time mamas of newborns, and children up to 36 months old. Online group sessions include various developmental specialists and mental health experts for advice along the way.
Being a mom is perhaps the most challenging job there is. A tiny little life is depending on you all day, every day, 365 days a year. Having a support system behind you and the proper tools to help your child succeed from day one, make all the difference in the world.
