BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, a boy band from South Korea has become tremendously popular in the last few years. Recently, they have stopped composing songs together which has disheartened many BTS fans, or “army” as they say.
Now, there are speculations that BTS members might be joining the military in South Korea.
South Korea Military Rule
In South Korea, it is obligatory for all physically capable men to join the military for 18 to 21 months. However, athletes, musicians, and dancers, who have boosted South Korea’s status and pride in the world have been exempted from joining the military.
Similarly, in the past few months, there have been several talks going on about whether the k-pop band should join military service or be exempted from it.
What Did The Government Say?
The commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration, Lee Ki Sik told the lawmakers on Friday that it would be desirable for BTS members to join the military in order to ensure equality in the country’s military service.
Last week, on 5th October, Park Bo Kyun, the minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) said that the issue will be discussed by the end of the year when he attended the National Assembly’s parliamentary inspection of the administration. It was a reply to Lee Yong Ho, a member of the People Power Party, who asked the minister to review the issue of BTS military service.

Minister Park further said, “We are comprehensively reviewing the issue by looking at various aspects including the points that national defense is a sacred duty, military service is a symbol of fairness, BTS has made Korea known as the vanguard of K-culture and created a huge economic ripple effect, there are equity issues between popular artists including BTS and those who practice fine arts, this will affect the group when one of the BTS members joins the army, there are [results of] public opinion analysis and opinions of men in their 20s, and so on.”
Opinion Of The Public
The public still has various opinions on whether BTS should be exempted or should they join the military. Many feel that they should join the military so that there is fairness within the nation.
According to a recent survey, 54% of people feel that BTS members should serve in the military, while 61% of the respondents believe they should be exempted from military service.
Now, the government of South Korea has to decide whether BTS members be exempted or not.
