Rawan Idris Barzani is currently the commander of the Kurdistan Region Special Forces’ First Brigade. Even before this notable achievement, he had enjoyed widespread name recognition due to his late father being the Kurdish leader Idris Barzani, while his brother Nechirvan Barzani is the current president of the Kurdistan region. Born on February 17, 1981, he has some extraordinary accomplishments already.
It was thanks to a major role Rawan played in the Middle East that the ISIS terror group was defeated in recent years. One of his most notable achievements was overseeing a long frontline that stretched over 100 KM from Mosul Dam to Sinjar in Iraq.
Rawan is perhaps best known for the support and assistance he provides to those in need. In fact, he has launched several initiatives that are designed to help young people. He knows what conflict can lead to all too well, and wants to help the youth of today who grow up in war-torn areas of the Middle East to carry peace in their hearts and minds, no matter what challenges they may face in life.
In Rawan’s eyes, there is a vital role that peace, mutual understanding, and cooperation play within any conflict. He has seen this during his time handling the ISIS threat that no longer poses an issue as it did before. Even though it may seem contradictory sometimes, it is possible to come to a mutual understanding, and even cooperation, between two sides that do not see eye to eye.
As someone who is still a relatively young person themselves, Rawan is able to connect with the youth of today’s Kurdistan region in a way that helps transmit his message of peace in a more receptive way. Thanks to his youth initiatives, fewer young people are under the threat of losing their lives to regional conflicts. He has helped dissuade them from allowing anger to burn within them and to instead follow the path of peace.
Even though Rawan has some extraordinary accomplishments under his belt, these were not done lightly. Getting involved in conflicts may appear as an easy and effective solution sometimes, but more times than not, it ends up causing more strife in the end. Thankfully, Rawan is a masterful strategist who has been blessed to come out unscathed.
Carrying the banner of peace and prosperity is something Rawan has made central to his philosophy for conflict resolution in the Kurdistan region. The lesson that comes out of all the wars and conflicts is that peace should be instilled within the hearts and minds of everyone, for the good of all. It is thanks to peace that factions like the Peshmerga forces were able to cooperate with the central Iraqi forces with the goal of protecting Iraqi elements within the Kirkuk governorate. The lessons Rawan learned are now something he shares with the next generation.
