Goals, tricks, determination and pure footballing spectacle – Words can’t describe the game last night between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid at the Westfalenstadion.

It was a purely engaging encounter between 2 top teams in Group F of the UEFA Champions League and it was worth every penny of the hype around it.

The match started brightly for both the sides with plenty of attacking intent by both the outfits and Dortmund looking good with high pressing whereas Real Madrid looking ever so dangerous with their renowned counter attacks.

Ronaldo had the first opportunity for Real Madrid, powering a dipping free kick which went straight into the keeper’s arms. It was a great shot, nonetheless.

Dortmund were made to pay in the 17th minute as a typical Madrid counter attack saw Gareth Bale drive into the box from the right and turn in a back heel nutmeg under pressure from a defender to Cristiano Ronaldo, who took a fierce shot and slammed the ball into the back of the net.

It was a vintage Ronaldo goal after a vintage Real Madrid counter attack.

Ronaldo rushed and greeted Zidane with a high five, thus putting an end to any speculation of a rift between the two and gave the Los Blancos a well-deserved lead.

Dortmund threatened Madrid at times but never had the final touch to make it count. Aubameyang hit the post from an offside position and was soon rewarded in the 43rd minute when a goalkeeping howler from Keylor Navas led Aubameyang tap in from a yard in the keeper’s box after a free kick deflected off of Raphael Varane’s shoulder.

It was an unfortunate goal and Navas should’ve held the ball instead punching it clear.

Varane made amends in the second half as Cristiano Ronaldo, who was having the best game of his season so far, curled in a scintillating cross for Benzema to tap home. Benzema hit it a touch too hard, the ball hit the post and came to Varane and he made no mistake in poking it hke from close range.

Real Madrid were back into the lead and for a while, it surely looked that they’d take the game and the 3 points.

But it was the introduction of Andre Schurrle that changed the game as the German international shrugged off a cramp to score a superb goal and bring Dortmund back into the game, which finished 2 – 2.

Although, Schurrle was seen surrounded by physios who were treating his knee but he had already done his job.

It was a fantastic match between two top clubs who played rich, vibrant and classic attacking football.

These two sides meet again on Matchday 6 of the UEFA Champions League at Real Madrid’s stadium, the eternally dominating Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
