It has been an exact year since Israel launched a devastating and destructive attack on Palestine, especially Gaza. The Palestinian group Hamas or the Islamic Resistance Movement, carried out an attack on Israel on 7th October, 2023 where about 1,139 people were killed and around 250 people taken hostage as per Israeli authorities.
However, in response to that, Israel launched an attack that has been active since then, completing one full year and resulting in a horrible level of destruction in various regions of Palestine.
According to Palestinian health officials, reports claim that so far this year Israeli attacks have killed 42,000 people and injured more than 96,000 people, most of them including women and children.
A report by Al Jazeera also stated that “90 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million population has been displaced” and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are living in extremely harsh conditions, without proper housing, having to live in tent camps, without food or proper medical aid, electricity, running water or even toilets.
Supporters of Palestine have been posting for over a year about the terrible atrocities that the people there are having to live through, or boycotting international companies that are siding with Israel, but even still major international governments have not taken any action to condemn Israel’s actions.
Al Jazeera also reported that “Shelter Cluster, an international coalition of aid providers led by the Norwegian Refugee Council, says it has struggled to bring in basic supplies because of Israeli restrictions, the ongoing fighting and the breakdown of law and order in Gaza. “
Here, on the one-year anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war, we take a look at some of the most heartbreaking cartoons and art created for the Palestinians and their suffering.
Palestinian artist Mohammad Sabaaneh (Instagram: @sabaaneh), posted this on 10th March 2024. The image shows murdered Palestinians wrapped up in white sheets being represented as crescent moons.
A visual artist from Gaza, Malak Mattar (Instagram: @malakmattarart) in a solo exhibition showcased this artwork called ‘No Words’ (2024).
The Instagram post states, “The painting weaves stories of human experiences from within the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023. In contrast to Mattar’s previously vibrant figures and compositions, this monumental work’s grey expressions and palette directly respond to the unfolding bloodshed.”
A tweet claims that Matter reportedly speaking about the painting said “This painting is not about hope – not even an ounce of it. It’s not something we will ever recover from.”

Sandra Dumais, an author and illustrator from Montréal, on 5th March posted this on her Instagram (@sandradumaisbooks).
The single-panel comic reflected the opposite sides of how people from around the world are witnessing what’s happening in Palestine, but still remain in safe quarters, meanwhile, the people of Gaza are forever in a state of terror.
In a December 2023 report by The Washington Post, Mohammad Sabaaneh a Palestinian artist created this art condemning how Israeli forces were killing children. The haunting image shows the dead bodies of kids lined around the tires of the tank.
Michel Kichka, an Israeli artist in the same WP report, created a cartoon touching on how war crimes affect innocent children. Speaking with The Post in an email he wrote “Even if he gets a proper answer to his question, there’s no difference for him between a war crime or a crime against humanity.”
This art piece created by Kenny Tosh, or Kehinde Omotosho, a Nigerian artist on 15 November 2023 touches upon the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rockets that were launched claiming to be for the Hamas hideouts, however, they instead the innocent civilians including women and children.
Tosh in his description wrote “The cartoon depict the barrages of rockets released by the IDF hitting Hospitals and schools probably used as hideout grounds by Hamas while scores of lives of women and children are on the high side in that raid. Women and children are easy targets in this whole raid.”
