The extra long pre-wedding rituals of Anant Ambani, the youngest son of one of the richest men in Asia, Mukesh Ambani, with Radhika Merchant, daughter of one of India’s billionaires, have created a lot of discussions, memes, and debates on social media.

Instagram is full of reels and pictures from luxurious events with many celebrities seen performing in them. However, the functions were not limited to Bollywood celebrities . Global stars such as Rihanna and Justin Bieber were also invited to perform in the events.

Justin Bieber reportedly got $10 million for performing at the couple’s sangeet. However, a lot of speculation about his ‘chaddi baniyan’ attire is being done. The surprising fact, though, is that this outfit actually has a fashion legacy and struggle associated with it. Here are all amazing facts about it.

Is This A New Trend?

The Canadian popstar, Justin Bieber, donned his signature look of a white vest, black baseball cap and black, low-waist bicycle shorts, which revealed his blue-green striped boxers in Mumbai at the Jio Convention Centre in Anant-Radhika’s sangeet performance.

The desis were very surprised and called it a bizarre fashion sense. People shared pictures of Justin in his vest and boxers during the performance and were amazed that he got paid in crores for that.

A Twitter user wrote, “Manmohan Tiwari from Bhabhi ji Ghar per hai sponsored Justin Beiber kacha baniyan…”

While another one said, “Yaar, ya to ye pajama pehen le ya Kaccha (Either wear the pyjama or the boxers).” “You have money doesn’t mean you are a gentleman,” pointed out another, while a person commented, “Ye 50 rs ka nikkar hai (This shorts looks worth ₹50).”

But actually, this is a legit fashion trend. Balenciaga is selling “sagging sweatpants with fake boxer briefs” sewn into the waistline for $1,200. In fact, sagging trousers are not new to the fashion world.

The style was initially popularised in Black pop culture by wearing pants lower than the waistline and revealing one’s boxers. Such trousers are called ‘trompe l’oeil’ in French, which means ‘optical illusion in art’.

The style introduction as mainstream has drawn the ire of the fashion police, calling out the mega fashion house for being racist and encouraging cultural appropriation.

What’s The History Of This Style?

The origin of sagging is murky but it is believed to come from prisons in the United States where belts are not allowed. Another theory says that it was born out of improvisation by children who could not afford tailors.

This style was popularised by hip-hop artists in the early 1990s, which led to it being banned in the US to avoid its association with criminal behaviour. Sagging was banned in New Jersey and Shreveport where Black men were arrested in overwhelming numbers.

Certain schools in the USA have also banned this outfit. Henderson State University, Arkansas, is one of them where the employees posted signs in the student centre stating that profanity, rude behaviour, and sagging pants would “not be tolerated”.

Students were concerned about the decision as they perceived that the ban was to target Black students.

It was in 2010 when ‘sagging’ reached the pinnacle of fame and popularity, being referenced in a myriad of rap songs by well-known artists such as Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, and Snoop Dogg.

Why Has This Become Justin Bieber’s Signature Style?

Justin Bieber has been seen wearing sagging pants for such a long time that it has now become a part of his signature look. Be it concerts or a normal working day, he is seen wearing rather long shorts, with his boxers exposed.

Although he has not mentioned any specific reason as to why he likes this style, he has defended it most of the time. For example, in 2020, he reposted an article by CNN on his official Instagram page. The article said that influencers have moved on from this kind of fashion. However, Bieber captioned the post saying, This is a lie from the pits of hell. My pants will stay sagging.”

Thus this is not a style created by a particular artist who performed in one of the many functions of Ambani’s pre-wedding, but a style that has been there for ages.
