What makes the Delhi Assembly Elections different this year?

How successful will the Modi wave be?

For the Bhartiya Janta Party, winning the Delhi Elections will not only act as a final stamp to its victories but will also highlight the powerful effect Narendra Modi has on the public. The party has finally got the chance to prove its metal since it has not been able to win the Chief Minister’s seat in Delhi for the last 16 years. Mr. Narendra Modi on January 10 launched the election campaign where he addressed people from the Ramlila Maidan for the Delhi elections with a promise of electricity supply 24/7.

He added, “Citizens of Delhi will soon have the option to choose their electricity provider just like mobile phone providers.”  He attacked one particular political party without taking any names and said, “We need development here and not anarchy. They are good at dharnas and we are good at running the government.” Where Satish Upadhyay, the Delhi President of the Bhartiya Janta Party seemed fully confident on winning the elections because of Modi’s magnetism, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar clearly stated how the party would win the Delhi Assembly Elections with a ‘clear majority’. He further added that before the 2019 General Elections the party would at least have 20 Chief Ministers in different states.

Kiran Bedi: Knight in Shining armour?

Just when Bhartiya Janta Party was caught up in the ‘Ghar Wapasi’ debate and had no way to answer the allegations made against it, Kiran Bedi’s entry into the political party silenced everyone for the time being since she turned out to be an ‘ace’ for the party. Not less than a knight’s entry in the shining armour, I believe! Where the Bhartiya Janta Party has still not declared its Chief Minister candidate, we all know who it is going to be. This party loves controversies and so one of the Bhartiya Janta Party councilors, Neeraj Gupta, was caught on camera slapping a government engineer who was trying to stop illegal construction in the South Delhi area. Time to keep calm Mr. Gupta else it may cost the party its votes at such a crucial time! ‘Kindly’, do not underestimate the power of a common man. Vinod Kumar Binny ,previously a leader of Aam Admi Party, joined the Bhartiya Janta Party on 18 January.

He was expelled from the Aam Admi Party last year on the grounds of violating the principles the party believed in. Recently, another Aam Admi Party leader Shazia Ilmi joined the Bhartiya Janta Party. The two are however also addressed as big opportunists by the Aam Admi Party supporters!

Internal Conflicts in the party causing more trouble than other political parties?

Where earlier senior leaders like Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Vijay Goyal and Jagdish Mukhi were being speculated as the Chief Minister candidates, the new ‘addition’ to the party has certainly changed the whole game. Well, Kiran Bedi definitely has an advantage over Kejriwal since she has always been that heroic figure for all of us, someone we have always looked upto. Also, comes in the question of women’s safety which has been made one of the top agendas of the Delhi Assembly Elections and who can do better justice to it than the first woman IPS officer of India itself as ‘most’ of the people believe in? That’s my point as well. However, we cannot judge or privilege anyone on the basis of their sex, class or caste. Who knows what one is capable of?

Kiran Bedi’s Dream to make Delhi a better place:
IMG-20150116-WA0037

Kiran Bedi on January 17 gave an outline to what vision she has for Delhi if Bhartiya Janta Party wins the Delhi Assembly Elections. The 6 P’s to solve the problems are: Prison, Prosecution, Parents, outreach to People, improving Policing which includes community policing and lastly Press( Source- NDTV). Bedi stated how her decision to enter politics was only because of the “revival of hope” through Modi’s leadership qualities. Well, only the final showdown will prove how connected she is with the people around. When questioned on her previous statements about the Bhartiya Janta Party and Narendra Modi, Bedi replied saying, “Life evolves, changes, I admire him as an administrator.”

Kejriwal aka MufflerMan strikes back with equal force:

Arvind Kejriwal recently bounced back into politics with the #MufflerMan campaign that went viral on the social media. The Aam Admi Party volunteers took it forward from there and started their campaigning with full enthusiasm by targeting different sections and raising issues which dealt with the common masses. The Party does not seem to lose hope even after its previous leaders are knocking the big doors of other political parties. It also warmly welcomed Kiran Bedi into politics even though she belongs to the rival camp. However, Aam Admi Party leader Yogendra Yadav stated, “Kiran Bedi will act as a cushion between Modi and Kejriwal because Bhartiya Janta Party was protecting the two leaders to be in a direct fight in the upcoming elections. The Bhartiya Janta Party wants to shield Modi and save him from embarrassment in the event of party’s defeat.” Kejriwal called the Bhartiya Janta Party a “sinking ship” and questioned whether Bedi will be able to save it or not.

Will Delhi witness the return of the Aam Admi Party?

Using Twitter as a public platform, he tweeted, “I want to make Delhi a better place and I am fighting for that while the Bhartiya Janta Party is fighting for that as it wants to defeat me.” The Aam Admi Party recently got into trouble when it was issued a notice by the Election Commission of India for violating The Model Code of Conduct when Kejriwal alleged the Delhi President of the Bhartiya Janta Party, Satish Upadhyay, of having a connection with some power distribution companies and also owning six companies out of which one has 2 VAT numbers which is against the law. In return to the attacks made on him about the negative politics he indulges in, he also made a subtle attack on Shazia Ilmi by retweeting her previous tweet from 2013 when she was a Aam Admi Party leader which read, “Hypocrisy, thy name is BJP.”

The Aam Admi Party was also happy with the response Modi’s Ramlila Maidan rally got since it wasn’t as successful as the Bhartiya Janta Party had expected it to be. Close to one lakh people were expected to turn up for the rally but figures close to only 35,000 were reported by the Delhi Police.

What about the other Masterminds?

It is definitely show time for Congress since it has not been able to attain victory with a clear margin during the elections all over the country. Where the party has decided to pool in former Delhi Minister Kiran Walia against Arvind Kejriwal, it is also trying its best to roll in leaders like Ajay Maken and Sharmistha Mukherjee. Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena’s President stated that the party is thinking about contesting in the Delhi Assembly Elections. He stated, “A final decision will be taken soon. However, there has been no talk so far on the poll alliance with anyone.”  The Bahujan Samajwadi Party President Mayawati announced that her party will also contest for all the 70 seats for the Delhi Assembly Elections on its own.

Well, the major battle lies between Aam Admi Party and the Bhartiya Janta Party as everyone in the country is aware of. Will the new additions to the Bhartiya Janta Party be successful in reviving the slowly fading Modi wave or will the Aam Admi Party sweep away all the votes? Let us not forget that Modi is not coming to Delhi! Talking about Congress, will the party we able to give Hi5’s in the face of other parties or will the elephant ride with pride again? We can only wait for the results ‘hoping’ that the most deserving candidate wins!
