In a recent episode of the podcast “Figuring Out With Raj Shamani,” Parineeti Chopra, the versatile Bollywood actor, shared her candid experiences of grappling with financial challenges during the early phase of her career. Her narrative provides a raw and authentic insight into the less glamorous aspects of the film industry.
Parineeti’s journey wasn’t devoid of hurdles, particularly when it came to finances. Despite her passion for acting, she found herself facing the harsh reality of financial constraints, a stark contrast to the glitz and glamour often associated with Bollywood.
Roots in Middle-Class Upbringing
Hailing from a modest middle-class background, Parineeti found it challenging to align with the extravagant lifestyle prevalent in the industry. She recalled, “I genuinely don’t come from a very rich background. I’m actually a very simple, middle-class girl. I genuinely don’t understand Bollywood.“
Navigating Judgement and Criticism
Parineeti’s honesty resonates in her accounts of feeling judged by those accustomed to the affluent circles of Bollywood. Despite her talent and dedication, she found herself under scrutiny for not fitting into the preconceived mold of a Bollywood star. She recounted, “People who were already from here and already knew this world judged me a lot.“
Persistence Amidst Adversity
She explained that during the early stages of her career, she didn’t earn much. Recalling the advice she received to hire a trainer and a nutritionist, each costing around Rs 2 lakh per month, to lose weight, she said, “I was like, ‘I don’t have 4 lakh a month to pay. I don’t make that money. This is my third film.”
She recounted a conversation with a co-actor who grew up in Bombay, where he questioned why she wasn’t hiring these professionals, emphasizing their importance for her job. Parineeti responded, “Listen, but I really can’t afford it. I was paid Rs 5 lakhs for my first film. That won’t even cover even one month of everything.”
Reflecting on his response, she remembered him saying, “If you can’t afford it, then you shouldn’t be in this profession,” which she felt was “so wrong on so many levels.”

The Importance of Financial Literacy
Parineeti’s journey underscores the significance of financial literacy, especially in an industry where perceptions of success can overshadow financial realities. Aspiring artists must equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to navigate the financial landscape effectively.
Parineeti goes on to narrate how she initially was fiscally smart with her investments. Being an actor in Bollywood, she was supposed to always doll up in the best of brands and papped while travelling in luxury and style. She says that she first made sure that her investments were in order: her home and car before she indulged in big brands and first-class travel.
Parineeti revealed that she didn’t get to enjoy luxuries such as flying in business or first class until later in life. It wasn’t until after finishing her fifth film and assessing her financial situation that she realized she could finally afford to indulge in things like designer bags and shoes. She remembered feeling judged in the past when people would suggest expensive clothing for her to wear, knowing she couldn’t afford it at the time.
Parineeti’s story mirrors the experiences of countless individuals striving to make it in competitive industries. Her candid revelations serve as a reminder that success is not solely determined by talent but also by the ability to manage finances wisely.
Empowerment through Financial Independence
As her career progressed, Parineeti gradually achieved financial stability. The journey from struggling to afford basic necessities to being able to indulge in luxuries serves as a testament to her perseverance and tenacity.
Parineeti’s narrative is not just a story of struggle but also of resilience and triumph. Her journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring artists, reminding them that success is attainable with dedication, despite the obstacles encountered along the way.
