The FIFA world cup is in full swing and football fans aren’t keeping calm. Every football fan supports their favourite team and wishes for them to win the game. But, on the contrary to this stands the Iranian people, who unexpectedly want their football team to lose in the world cup which is being hosted by Qatar.

Why Do They Want This?

The news of the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman has become news of global interest and since that incident, protests are going on in Iran to raise their voice against the government and its rules and regulations.

Iranians wish their team, Team Melli, would lose the trophy. This is happening because Iranian people believe that the football team isn’t representing the people of their country. Instead, people feel that the team represents the regime; hence, they sought the team’s defeat in the world cup hosted by Qatar.

Protest On Social Media

The Iranian people and activists have been vocal about their opinion of wanting their team to lose. An Iranian activist, Masih Alinejad took to Twitter and wrote, “Iran is the only country in the World Cup that its people want their national football team to lose since the team doesn’t represent the people but the regime.”

“We want our people to win in the streets where protestors are getting killed for demanding freedom and dignity,” the activist wrote.

The activist is well-known internationally and represents Iranian women who are being bashed, imprisoned, and murdered for not wearing hijab.

Iranian Football Team’s Stand

It is a ritual, before the beginning of the game, the teams sing the national anthem of the country they are representing. However, the Iranian football team refused to sing the national anthem in order to unite with the anti-government protestors.

When their national anthem was played, they stood in the stadium grim-faced and impassively. The players seem to be caught between two sides. One is the side of Iranian officials who want them to be loyal to Tehran’s embattled Islamic establishment and the other side is of their fans who want the team to stand with the protestors.
