Who Is Ahoo Daryaei, Why Did She Strip To Her Underwear In A Country Like Iran?

An Iranian woman called Ahoo Daryaei has been in the news recently after she was found protesting against harassment by stripping down to her underwear at Tehran’s prestigious Islamic Azad University.

She was later seen to have been bundled into a car by men dressed in plain clothes and taken to an undisclosed location.

What Was Ahoo Daryaei Protesting?

The woman who was previously unidentified, is claimed to go by the name Ahoo Daryaei, as per some reports. The woman has been in the news for the past two days for protesting against members of the Basij paramilitary force who harassed her by forcefully ripping her headscarf and clothing.

Videos started circulating on Saturday, 2 November 2024, where she was seen walking back and forth dressed in just her underwear, at the Islamic Azad University campus.

Amir Kabir, an Iranian student social media channel, was among the first to post videos of the woman’s protest. It was later picked up by various Persian-language outlets, such as the Hengaw rights group and Iran Wire news website, along with Amnesty International.

A newsletter by Amir Kabir alleged that she was “disrobed after being harassed for not wearing a headscarf and having her clothing torn by security forces” and also that she was beaten while being arrested.

Amnesty International further called for her immediate release in a statement “Iran’s authorities must immediately and unconditionally release the university student who was violently arrested after she removed her clothes in protest against abusive enforcement of compulsory veiling by security officials.”

This protest wasn’t just for her harassment but the contradictory law that mandates women in Iran to always wear a headscarf and loose-fitting clothes in public.

Iran has had veiling laws since the 1980s, post the Iranian Revolution of 1979, and a morality police or Gasht-e-Ershad was further established in 2006.

This was done to ensure that the laws were being strictly implemented. The morality police patrol public places, including schools and colleges, and closely supervise what women wear.

This is not the first time this law has been protested against, with Iranian-Kurdish Mahsa Amini also being arrested in 2022 for supposedly violating this law.

Her death in custody later on, led to massive protests across the country with women burning their headscarves, going in public without any head covering, and Iranian actress Hengameh Ghaziani was even detained when she showed support for the movement by posting on Instagram without her hijab.

The crackdown by authorities also resulted in the death of over 500 protesters.

The woman, however, saw a lot of support online with people applauding her bravery.

In recent news, there have been questions and concerns on the whereabouts of the woman arrested. Amnesty International’s Iran chapter has spoken out it, calling for her immediate release and that she be allowed to meet her family and lawyer.

The organisation said, “Authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment, and ensure access to family and lawyer. Allegations of beatings and sexual violence against her during arrest need independent and impartial investigations.”

Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Islamic Republic of Iran also wrote on her X/Twitter page that she would be “monitoring this incident closely, including the authorities’ response.”
