The last couple of decades have seen the advent of some truly amazing television series. Some of these shows seem to have been around since… well, forever. Bart Simpson has been the same annoying brat for about 25 years now and South Park has been entertaining us from the very beginning of time.
Unlike these animated wonders, some of their non-animated contemporaries have not shared the same fate. While some TV shows were rated pretty high, they didn’t have much more to offer to audiences in terms of a storyline, and it was deemed necessary to take them off the air.
“Shows may come and shows may go, but The Simpsons goes on forever.”
Here is a list of the shows which we never really could get enough of. Oh, how I wish some of these would still be on air!
- Dexter
How often does a TV show come along where the protagonist plays a positive as well as a negative role? Well, Dexter was one of them. The story about a serial killer, who managed to direct his lust for blood only towards those who ‘deserved’ it, keeps one entertained and rapt for all 8 seasons. This killer with a conscience is unmatched. Plus there’s his beautiful sister. *wink*
- How I Met Your Mother
To put it in Neil Patrick Harris’ words, HIMYM was ‘legen-wait for it, and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant because the next part of this word is – DA(I)RY! Legendary!’
Umpteen times I have wished for having a group of friends as awesome as Ted Mosby’s. The best puns, the catchiest phrases, the best fashion sense (no kidding).Though the final season was a minor disappointment, the show never lost its special touch and remains my all-time favorite SitCom.
- Breaking Bad
Well, do I really need to explain why this show makes the cut? When meth head meets chemistry teacher, hilarity ensues. An entertaining show, it even manages to take viewers on a feels trip with its cancer element. While the show no longer airs, it has found a perfect replacement in Better Call Saul, a prequel to the Bryan Cranston starrer, in the world of AMC and Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould.
- House M.D.
A DramCom, House M.D. is probably one of the wittiest TV shows I have ever seen. Hugh Laurie plays a crippled, lazy diagnostician to perfection. Dr. House is sarcastic, funny, mean and miserable. To add to that, he’s addicted to a certain painkiller called Vicodin. Not exactly anyone’s life goals, but he still is pretty awesome. Also, House gets a taste of his own medicine (see what I did there?) once in a while, at the hands of his boss, Lisa Cuddy, and his oncologist friend, Dr. James Wilson.
The show had a few budgeting and production issues due to which it was cancelled after its eighth season. Nevertheless, it still managed to have a powerful finale and maintained its stand of being a medical drama throughout the duration of the show. - Entourage
Few TV shows manage to keep viewers entertained as long as Entourage did, while basically revolving around the same plot for the entire series. The story of a rising Hollywood star and his friends who made it out of a rough Queens neighborhood, this show is the perfect rags to riches story.
What carries the show are the diversified characters and how well they are played by the actors. From a vulgar, loud-mouthed publicist to a shy manager, Vincent Chase works with some of the most interesting people in Hollywood. - F.R.I.E.N.D.S
First, I must admit that I have never been a fan of this show. It just never appealed to me. That said, I didn’t feel it would be right to exclude this TV show from this list, considering how many people love it and consider it to be an evergreen production of comedy.
From the few episodes I did watch, I can surely say that it does have some of the best one-liners the small screen has to offer.
The shows mentioned above might not be airing anymore, but let’s take a moment to praise the torrent portals which have managed to keep these shows just a click away from our lives (and Star World, which airs TV shows 5 seasons after they air in the US). While there are new shows coming up all the time, some truly special ones will be forever.
