Resenteeism refers to the phenomenon where employees of a company are dissatisfied with their jobs and work environment and are not afraid to show it. Employee apathy and annoyance are no longer expressed subtly.
If they are dissatisfied with their work and the way they are treated, they outwardly express how they feel through poor performance and a lack of drive. In other words, they dislike their jobs and it is evident.
Quiet Quitting and Resenteeism
Resenteeism is thought to naturally follow silent quitting. For the uninitiated, quiet quitting simply refers to a circumstance where employees don’t quit their jobs outright but begin to perform the bare minimum duties and significantly reduce their enthusiasm or curiosities at work.
However, resenteeism does not allow the employees to be tactful enough to mask their unhappiness behind a garb of corporate politeness.
How Did Resenteeism Come Into Being?
There were mass resignations that occurred in 2021 when many people decided to leave their employment due to the pandemic’s aftermath, a lack of work-life balance, and burnouts.

However, a number of employees were forced to put up with a poor working environment due to concerns about their job security. They became quiet quitters as a result, and today they have an entirely negative attitude towards their work.
According to RotaCloud, the business that created this word and provides employee management software, “Employees that feel undervalued, underappreciated, and worried about their futures are never going to be happy in their jobs, and the rise in resenteeism, while worrying, isn’t unexpected.”
Steps That Can Be Taken To Prevent Resenteeism:
- Creating a safe environment for the employees so that they are comfortable enough to share their resentments in a healthy manner.
- Creating reward programmes to acknowledge and appreciate the employees that put in efforts.
- Providing regular breaks for relaxation.
