Khair ul Bashar, a professor at COMSATS University in Islamabad, Pakistan, was recently dismissed from his position, and an official investigation has been filed against him by the Ministry of Science and Technology after he asked his students to share their opinions on incest in an examination.

Professor Bashar was sacked on January 5, 2023, but the incident gained public attention only after someone posted a picture of the question paper and the controversial questions on Twitter.

Incident In Detail

On December 6, 2022, first-semester students pursuing Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering at COMSATS University, Islamabad, were completely taken aback when they received the question paper that instructed them to write a 300-word essay on whether it is right or wrong for a brother to have sexual intercourse with his sister.

The professor named Khair ul Bashar, who included the question on incest in the BEE English Composition and Comprehension paper, was immediately fired and blacklisted by the university. Someone also lodged a complaint against him in Islamabad’s Shehzad Town police station.

Social media is flooded with posts and tweets, where the netizens not only criticized the professor but also the rest of the faculty members for allowing such an “immoral” and “objectionable” question as a quiz for Engineering students.

The Additional Registrar of Comsat University, Naveed Khan, told the press, “It (the incident) is true and the university in a stern action has removed the teacher. The teacher told the inquiry committee that he copy-pasted a passage from a case study without properly reading it.”

The Controversial Question

The passage that was given on the question paper read,

“Julie and Mark are brother and sister. They are traveling together in France on summer vacation from college. One night they are staying alone in a cabin near the beach.

They decided that it would be interesting and fun if they tried making love. At the very least, it would be a new experience for each of them. Julie was already taking birth control pills, and Mark uses a condom too, just to be safe.

They both enjoy making love. But they decide never to do it again. They keep that night as a special secret which makes them feel even closer to each other.”

The students were then asked to justify the act of incest between Julie and Mark and give “relevant examples” and “personal opinions” to support their answers.

Government’s Disapproval

When the matter reached the ears of parliament members and the government, it created an uproar. He said that the question paper was “highly objectionable” for “causing unrest among the families of the students.”

The government also ordered the Rector of COMSATS University, Islamabad, to take severe measures against the professor held responsible.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, a member of the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami, claimed, “There should be a probe to ask the university about it. It is an attack on our religion, our honor and values.”

Public Criticism

Several Twitter users have slammed the professor and the university. They have expressed their severe disapproval of the twisted question that was put as a quiz for first-semester engineering students.

Actress Mishi Khan tweeted, “Shame on you @cuissbs. Your pathetic university should be sealed and the perverted teachers should be kicked out. Whoever asked this question should be behind the bars. How dare you ask this filthy question?”

Shehryar Bukhari, who is helping Imran Khan with his PTI, wrote on social media, “The top universities of Pakistan are on a mission to destroy the youth of Pakistan and our culture and religious values!”

A writer and researcher, Shama Junejo, said, “I have lived & studied in West since decades, my children have studied in UK since their childhood, I have never seen or read any such filth, what I read in this examination of COMSATS university to promote incest. Whoever designed it, is a sick bastard & must be removed immediately.”

An official letter from the COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) also read, “The content of the quiz is highly objectionable and totally against the curriculum laws of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and caused unrest amongst the families of the students.”
