Nambi Narayanan, an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist was wrongfully convicted of espionage. Rocketry is a film that tries to dive deep into this allegation and bring out the truth.
Also, interestingly enough, R. Madhavan or our favourite “Farhanitrate” had to “break his jaw” in order to shoot the film!
In this article, we explore these facts.
With the July 1 premiere of Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, R. Madhavan will make his directing debut. He claims that not knowing about Nambi Narayan’s brilliance is a “national disservice.”
In this movie, Madhavan assumes Nambi Narayanan’s role in telling his narrative to the world. In addition to directing and starring, he also wrote the script, the songs, and provided the financial backing for the movie.
After a little digging on the internet, some facts about the Nambi Narayanan case were found. The scenario opens with the detention of Mariam Rasheeda, a citizen of the Maldives, in October 1994 for allegedly getting top-secret blueprints for ISRO rocket engines in order to sell them to Pakistan.
This resulted in the detention of a number of people, including K. Chandrasekhar, the Indian representative of a Russian space organisation, D. Sasikumaran, and Narayanan, who was at the time the director of an ISRO cryogenic project. The Maldivian nationals remained in detention while the ISRO scientists and businesspeople were freed on bail in January 1995.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed a Kerala court in April 1996 that the espionage case was untrue and that there was no supporting documentation. The court dismissed all parties after accepting the CBI’s closing report.

The movie Rocketry aims at carefully weeding out the truth and presenting to the audience the story of Nambi Narayanan, a brilliant ISRO scientist.
For the past several weeks, Madhavan has been occupied with film promotion. As a result, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect has created a tonne of excitement online and is currently trending on Twitter. Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya didn’t receive any payment for their cameo appearances in Madhavan’s next film, which he was marketing.
Now, coming back to the wacky detail – the jaw breaking incident. In a recent interview with popular media house India Today, R. Madhavan has been recorded saying that “Yes, I had to break my jaw to look like him. It took one and a half years. We did a lot of things for the first time that nobody had ever done before. It was all worth it. We’ve done some crazy stuff.”
The actor and director wanted to perfectly re-create Narayanan’s look and hence, did not leave any stones unturned.
July 1st 2022, is going to be a big day for both R. Madhavan and Nambi Narayanan.
