Matrimonial ads can range from bizarre and strange to humorously naive and insulting. It is not entirely new for such ads to go viral now and then, such is the nature of social media where people can take a seemingly innocuous thing and make it known to practically everyone.
However, there are also times that the trolling of seemingly normal profiles happens just because people with opposing opinions cannot understand how something like this could exist.
What Happened?
Recently, a post by a man named Shonee Kapoor came under scrutiny after he posted a screenshot of a woman’s profile at a matrimonial site.
In his caption, he wrote: “Marriage (cross mark) Retirement plan (tick mark) She is not looking for a man, she is planning for her retirement from whatever she is doing till now. Note that she is planning to have dogs instead of kids.”
The profile being mocked is of a 33-year-old woman, who according to her profile is earning between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh per annum. In her profile on the matrimonial site, she mentioned that she was not “traditional” or “family-oriented”, and doesn’t want kids but will adopt a “lot of dogs in the future”.
She also said that while she is “interested in arrange marriage”, she is “not up for relocation”.
On the surface, none of these things seem too strange, with this being the usual norm at matrimonial sites where people will write such things on their profile so they can get matched accordingly with people who are on the same page as them.
However, the post did go viral, getting over 644,000 views on X/Twitter and concerningly had a lot of people either supporting the original tweet or ridiculing the woman for stating her needs.

One user wrote: “Over aged, No cooking, No to kids, No to relocation, Not really earning, Not family oriented, NOT SURE WHAT SHE BRINGS TO A MARRIAGE” while another wrote “koi hutia hi hoga jo is ke chakker me fasega…or i am sure she just mentioned 5-7.6 lac income maybe it’s fake …….”
Another user wrote: “When she says she doesn’t want kids ->Run away as far as possible.”
One user commented: “i am not traditional oriented, red flag. Save yourself. Only if Dogs had a matrimony page – Bharat Dog Matrimony” while another replied with “Is gawar se shaadi karega kaun? Jab kuch nahi karna toh apne baap ke ghar par hi rahey.”
One person wrote: “Bets she had already married a few times. No girl puts out advertisements for herself and that too when it’s for an arranged marriage. It could be one of those short term stock holding plans with little investment and high returns.”
There were a few who didn’t find anything wrong with the profile or what was listed and defended the woman.
One wrote: “She is clear on her future goals or plans, right? She is not forcing anyone to marry her, right? If her goals are not syncing from yours move away. What’s the big deal here?” while another said, “Why do you need to put something very personal without her consent? She is upfront and not forcing anyone to marry her. Whats the problem?”
Many also called out the original poster posting the private information of a woman on social media and how this was wrong.
User @ravihanda wrote: “Naah mate. This is wrong. You should not share private information about someone and paint a target on them.” User @Dishasatra tagging Delhi Police replied, “is it legal to share details of a woman like this publicly because she is not an ideal matrimonial match?”
User @AnilPune3 commented: “She may be a red flag but be ready to defend a case for throwing someone under the bus publicly. Matrimony and dating is a personal issue, this is in many ways so not done. Take it down.”
Another user @abaseeth wrote: “Everyone has the right to make personal choices, including finding a partner who makes them happy. Her decisions deserve respect, not scrutiny. Neither you nor I have any place discussing her private life. It would be respectful to delete your post and honor her autonomy.”
User @bronz_O_Genius also wrote: “I don’t understand what’s the hue and cry on this, bcoz it’s a female’s profile ?? It’s her life & honesty that prior to marriage, she has disclosed openly her choices . You shouldn’t have shared her profile along with the pic.
It’s invading someone’s privacy & generally illegal & is considered a violation of personal rights. Sharing personal information without consent is considered illegal. Who knows better than you ,being a lawyer yourself.
She can sue you.. She is not gonna marry anyone forcefully, only a Man who is willing & ok with it will do.. At least she is honest about her choices. What if she would have said/done the same after Marriage ??? Then Men here would be doing RR that she is a Gold digger blah blah..!!! Masters in Labeling Women.. It would be better U remove her Profile and delete the post..”
