Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.
I always stand by the rule of doing something if I want to do it. But this wasn’t always the case.
We often refrain from doing stuff or rather often do a lot of things just to live up to society’s expectations, and sacrificing our own in the process. Why not live life our way? The way we want to? To make ourselves happy?
It’s okay to not feel good in our own skin sometimes. But, wanting to change to fit in or be accepted in society is not. It’s been more than a decade since Kareena Kapoor started the ‘size zero’ figure trend in Bollywood. Yet, teenagers are still crazy about it. People limit their food intake which leads to eating disorders resulting in anorexia; an ailment unavoidable.
All of us have heard celebrities talking about their eating habits and training sessions. Teenagers are very influenced by these public figures. I feel while trying to follow them blindly, we lose our own identity. Why follow a ‘keto’ diet because an XYZ celeb is saying?

Join the gym, only if you want to. Eat healthy, to improve your lifestyle. Don’t stop taking another bite because an aunty keeps passing looks at you and your plate. Don’t try to gain weight because the same ‘desi’ aunty has a problem with you being skinny. Do it, only and when you want to.
While all of us verbally accept being different is actually okay, we still have a set mentality of how bodies should be. While all of us want people to welcome us the way we are, we still ask our peers uncomfortable questions such as “Have you gained weight?” Which could have only two answers- “Um, yes a bit. Is it so visible?” or “No, does it look like I have?” Both of which are very awkward ways to start a conversation.
So, guys, let’s just stop destroying our mental health because of some toxic relative or desi aunty. Let’s not form a picture of how a perfect body should be. If we want people to accept us the way we are, we must begin with ourselves. How about we not form any beauty standards?
Sounds great, doesn’t it?
Be the change to bring the change!
