Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.
For the longest time, I hated the phrase “fake it till you make it”.
It sounded dishonest. As if it were what someone delusional would say when asked for advice.
Besides, how can one fake confidence? If you’re nervous, you’re nervous. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you don’t know what you’re doing.
Simple.
Or at least that’s what I thought.
I always thought I’d only be able to do well at something if I genuinely knew what I was doing. Being spontaneous felt like a lie that experts told those who blindly believed them.
After all, shouldn’t confidence come from knowing what you’re doing?
But the older I get, the more I realize that life rarely gives us the luxury of feeling fully prepared.
No one prepares you for the adversities life throws at you.
There’s no handbook for heartbreak. No guidebook for handling failure. No rehearsal before making some of life’s most important decisions.

Most of life arrives unannounced.
And yet, people show up.
Not because they know exactly what they’re doing, but because they learn while doing it.
That’s when I began to understand that maybe I had misunderstood the phrase all along.
“Fake it till you make it” isn’t about pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s about not allowing uncertainty to stop you from trying.
It’s about raising your hand before you’re completely sure of the answer. It’s about taking a chance on an opportunity, even if it terrifies you.
Somewhere along the way, I understood that. With every “yes” said to an opportunity. With every chance taken to be better.
Not because I suddenly became fearless.
If anything, I was still nervous. I still doubted myself. I still wondered whether I was capable enough.
Looking back, there have been so many instances where I took a chance I never thought I would. And I’m really thankful that I did.
And slowly, the phrase that I once found delusional became the mantra I started to live by.
