Why You Are Unable To Tell The Difference Between AI And Real, And Here’s How To Do It

Today, between every scroll, every reel is an image or video, precisely generated using AI, so meticulously made that even the keenest eyes of an entire generation born with smartphones in their hands can sometimes be deceived.

It’s no secret that AI has taken the whole world by storm. From generating fake images to cloning the voices of people for fraud and fun, to creating fake news and viral videos, AI has seeped into our daily lives in such a way that it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between real and fake.

Why Distinguishing AI From Reality Has Become a 50-50 Chance

Only a few years ago, identifying AI-generated content was relatively easy. These images and videos featured distorted facial features and jarring, unnatural-sounding voices or blurred backgrounds. Deepfake videos struggled to keep up with smooth lip-syncing to audio, which made it extremely easy to determine the authenticity of the video.

However, today, the line between AI-generated content and real content is dramatically thin.

A study by Cornell University analysing almost 2,87,000 image evaluations involving more than 12,500 participants globally revealed that humans correctly identified AI-generated images only 62 per cent of the time, only slightly better than random guessing.

Another study published by Springer Nature, in Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications, found that AI-generated images were almost indistinguishable from real photographs, usually featuring fictional identities that do not exist in real life.

Furthermore, a 2025 study by Scientific Reports revealed that humans cannot determine the difference between an AI-generated voice and a human voice. It was found that almost 80 per cent of the time, participants of the study could not tell apart the AI-generated voice from their counterpart.

What makes this situation far more alarming is that Artificial Intelligence is evolving at a way faster rate than humans are learning about it. Technology companies are releasing increasingly advanced versions of AI models capable of generating highly realistic content that copies real human behaviour. Unlike earlier AI-generated content, which often contained obvious flaws, these newer updates are trained on much more advanced datasets.

Highlighting this, journalist Sarah Jeong wrote in The Verge, “The default assumption about a photo is about to become that it’s faked, because creating realistic and believable fake photos is now trivial to do.”

Further, speaking of synthetic content, Adam Mosseri explained, “For most of my life, I could safely assume photographs or videos were largely accurate captures of moments that happened. This is clearly no longer the case, and it’s going to take us years to adapt.”

“We’re going to move from assuming what we see is real by default, to starting with skepticism. Paying attention to who is sharing something and why. This will be uncomfortable. We’re genetically predisposed to believing our eyes.”

How to Distinguish Between AI Content and Real One

Despite the increasing improvement of AI, it’s not completely impossible to detect, at least not yet. As per the MIT Media Lab, AI-generated videos still struggle with maintaining consistency in fine details, and detecting them is possible if paid attention to.

Even though there’s no single way to detect an AI-generated image or video, several details signal towards a threshold of accuracy that Artificial Intelligence is yet to cross. The following are a few ways we can detect content generated using Artificial Intelligence.

1. In the case of deepfakes, it is relatively easier to understand if the visual is generated using AI. By paying close attention to facial features, it is possible to easily determine if an image is a deepfake by looking out for any distortion in the expression or features. 

2. Looking out for details like the smoothness of the face or any fine lines appearing is another way. Usually, AI models fail to maintain a natural consistency while generating manipulated images. So, if the face appears too smooth or too wrinkly or if the ageing of the face does not quite match the agedness of the hair or the rest of the body, it’s likely to be a deepfake.

3. Paying attention to the facial hair or other minute details like moles is also a way of identifying AI content. Usually, AI models either overemphasise or underemphasise these details. So content generated by AI can have too much or facial hair or none at all; likewise, if there are moles, there is a chance they do not appear natural.

4. Another way to determine a visual generated using Artificial Intelligence is by noticing the blinking pattern of the person in the video. If they seem to be blinking too much or unnaturally, it might be a fake.

5. Some other details include lip syncing, movement of hands, or consistency of the background. Most AI-generated deepfakes pay attention only to the face and not the rest of the details of the video/image. 

6. While identifying texts generated using AI isn’t a sure shot, it is still possible. Most AI chatbots follow a certain rhythmic sequence while generating texts that are easily identifiable. Further, several tools also assist in detecting AI patterns in texts. While they might not be 100 per cent accurate, an AI-like pattern can still be determined using them. 

7. In the case of news, it is very important to pay close attention to the sources of information. Most frauds take place when people trust random posters and texts claiming a scheme run by the government, so, before trusting a website or information, it is important to make sure that the source is a reliable one. 

AI is taking over every industry and every aspect of our lives, yet it’s important to understand that Artificial Intelligence is still a tool made to assist humans perform efficiently. With proper awareness, it is possible to reduce the risks associated with AI-generated misinformation and synthetic media. 

For now, the safest thing people can do is pretty simple. Pausing before trusting everything they see online and educating themselves on the evolutions taking place around AI can help because somewhere along the way, the gap between reality and AI is as thin as a scroll.
