Breakfast Babble: Here Are The Weird Things I Have Done For My Sibling

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

Siblings are the best. And by best, I mean, they’re the only people who can get away with being your worst nightmare and your most loyal ally all in the same breath. Growing up with a sibling in India is like living in a real-life sitcom, where the humour is as spicy as mom’s biryani and the drama is as endless as the number of Indian festivals.

But as every Indian sibling knows, beneath all the pranks, fights, and emotional blackmail, there’s a deep well of love. How else can you explain the utterly bizarre things we do for them?

The Great Exam Heist

In India, exams are treated with the same reverence as cricket finals. So, when my sibling was facing the dreadful Class 10 board exams, I did what any good sibling would do: I staged a heist. Not of the question papers – let’s not get ahead of ourselves – but of all distractions.

I confiscated phones, hid remote controls, and even set a password on the Wi-Fi. Of course, I became her assistant, bringing chai on demand, quizzing her on trigonometry, and listening to her rants about how the system is rigged.

Did she do the same for me during my exams? Ha! That’s cute.

The Classic “Blame-Shift”

You’re not an Indian sibling if you haven’t mastered the art of blame-shifting. Once, my sister accidentally smashed one of Mom’s prized glass bowls while dancing to a sassy new song. I could have let her face the music, but no I took one for the team.

“I was trying to get a closer look at the design and, oops, it slipped from my hand,” I said, feigning innocence. Of course, I had to deal with Mom’s dramatic sighs about how she could never have nice things, but at least my baby sister was safe.

She owes me one, and trust me, I’ll collect on that debt.

The “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” Reenactment

Yes, we did it. My sibling and I once reenacted the iconic “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” rain scene for her Instagram reel. It wasn’t my idea (it never is!), but how could I say no when she showed up with Mom’s old chiffon saree and the promise of unlimited Maggi if I helped?

So, there I was, pretending to be Rahul, while she dramatically tossed the saree around, lip-syncing to “Tum Paas Aaye.” We even made it rain—using a bucket of water and a lot of enthusiasm.

The result? A viral reel and a memory that will haunt me forever.

The Food Sacrifice

You know you love your sibling when you sacrifice food for her, especially if it’s the last piece of mom’s famous Gulab jamun. Indian food is sacred, and giving up the last bite is no small act of devotion.

But when I saw her eyeing that last piece with puppy-dog eyes, I sighed and handed it over. Did she thank me? No, but she did give me a look that said, “You’re the best.”

And that, my friends, is all the appreciation you’ll ever get in an Indian household.

In the grand scheme of things, these weird things we do for our siblings are what make the relationship so special. We may drive each other crazy, but we’re also the first ones to come to each other’s rescue or just a shared laugh over how ridiculous we are.

So here’s to all the siblings out there. May your pranks be legendary, your sacrifices minimal, and your love for each other weird and wonderful.
