Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

It all started on a bright, sunny morning, the kind that makes you think everything will go perfectly. My friends and I decided to take our first trip to Nainital. Little did we know, our plans would turn into hilarious stories perfect for gossip.

Our adventure began with the usual travel mess: the bus. We thought we boarded a comfy Volvo bus but ended up in a rickety old one that seemed older than my grandma. The bus creaked up the hills while we listened to a chorus of snoring uncles and a goat bleating from the back.

We reached Nainital, excited for the fresh mountain air, and a lovely lakeside hotel room. But our “lake view” room overlooked the hotel’s laundry area. We were greeted by flapping towels and a colourful sari, not quite the serene view we imagined.

Trying to make the best of things, we headed to Naini Lake for a pedal boat ride. Sounds good, right? Nope. We crashed into everything: other boats, the dock, and even a grumpy duck. Our attempts at pedalling were a mess, leaving us with tired legs and lots of laughs.

No trip to Nainital is complete without a trek, so we set off for Snow View Point with Google Maps and high spirits. Our navigator decided to take a “shortcut” through a forest. Hours later, we ended up in someone’s backyard vegetable garden, much to the owner’s surprise.

An Indian trip isn’t complete without street food. We tried the famous ‘Sonam Ke Momos’, and my friend, the brave one, ate them with the spiciest chutney. The result? A mad dash to the nearest washroom and a lesson to respect spicy food.

As our trip ended, we discovered our return bus tickets were for the wrong date. With no seats in the buses available, we hitched a ride in a truck and got stuck in traffic, then we had to deboard and run for the next local bus. The ride back was filled with hiccups, negotiations, and swearing but now as we look back it seems like the best trip ever.

Back home, our Nainital misadventures became legendary. Friends and family loved our stories of the laundry view room and the pedal boat disaster. We learned that the best trips are the ones that go hilariously off-track, giving us endless stories to laugh about for years to come.

So, if you hear someone planning a trip to Nainital, remember our story. And maybe, just maybe, take the easier route instead of trying adventure.
